Here’s a quick tutorial on how I 3D printed and constructed Kitana’s fans from Mortal Kombat 9.
Started with a reference picture and produced a CAD file, which is a 3D model made in the computer.
Made my first print at 0.3mm; Infill didn’t make a difference. Printed in ABS with my Makerbot Replicator 2x.
Used ABS cement to glue/bond the pieces together. ABS cement does more than just connect the pieces, it basically “welds” them together due to the acetone in the cement. One full blade is about 13″ long.
Made some templates for the fan portion between the blades. Printed and tested the folding techniques.
Adjusted for correct positioning.
Measured the curvature, which happens to NOT be a perfect half circle, FYI.
Used basic double sided tape from the dollar store just to hold the paper to each other.
Used ABS cement again to glue the paper to the fan blades.
My 3D file was made to fit a 5/8″ (wide) x 3/16″ (diameter) aluminum post that holds all of the blades together.
Wrapped the handles with black cloth and it’s FINISHED!!!
