Kit comparison question

Looking to buy BSG Pegusus/NuGalactica kits, are the Bad-Azz kits that much better than the Moebius kits. The pricing is almost 4 times for the B-A over the Moebius?

What is the major difference weight, seams, 4 times the detail, ease of assembly?

The main things to consider are these: What are you looking for in a kit? What's your budget?

First off, BadAzz models doesn't produce a resin NuGalactica in 1/4105 scale, which is what the Moebius Models Galactica and Pegasus kits are scaled at. So, that's one question pretty much answered. ;)

From all I've seen of the BadAzz Pegasus kit, it's very nice. Beautifully and intricately detailed, it appears to be very accurate to the CGI model (I can't tell you for sure, tho, as I've never had access to the reference materials with the one kit I was able to physically look at), and it appears that parts fit is pretty tight, tho again, I've never built one and don't own one, but from the two people I've talked to who own this kit and my own fondling's, it appears to be well engineered and cast. It's resin, tho, so there's likely to be some minor warping of parts here and there, as well as potential pin holes and outright air bubbles here and there, as well as more prominent seam lines and pour stubs to remove. It happens with resin kits. You can bet that the decals are top-notch, as well. Definite plus is that the landing bays are open all the way thru. The main thing that kind of turns me off to the BA Pegasus kit is that the hull surface appears to be too intricate to my personal tastes.

I do own multiples of the Moebius Models kit, tho, and am in the process of building my second. Pluses for the MM kit: It's relatively cheap, lightweight, has clear parts for the engines so can pretty easily be lit - there are several online if you look around - and can be picked up in most model shops. You can also find it at a variety of online sources, to include Amazon.com (free Priority shipping if you've got an Amazon.com Prime account!). There are also several aftermarket parts available for this model. It's plastic so it's easy to modify if you want to kitbash it or alter it somewhat for a personal design.

The downsides are:

* the Flight Pod arms lack detail on the sides,
* landing bays are not opened up all the way thru
* there is zero detail on the inside of the landing bays where you can see in and the front detail at the openings isn't 100% accurate
* there is detail that's wrong or outright lacking a few places (no gun platforms in 12 spots, nose antenna arrangement is inaccurate, the detail on the upper back of the Gator head is missing and a few other minor things)

All that being said, all of the issues w/the MM kit are fixable. You can easily buy multiple MM Pegasus kits and have fun building them into different ships of the Mercury-class. Or buy one MM kit, the Photoetch set for the landing bays and the Catalyst Creations Pegasus Upgrade Set and still come in under the price of the Bad Azz kit - or any combination of the above.

As much as I love the BA kits that I've purchased and/or handled in the past, I just can't currently justify the expense of a $295 (on sale for $225 at present) kit right now. I've paid $250 for resins kits in the past and never blinked an eye, but had budgeted for them when I did so, and I can't even budget that much at one time at the present. That, and I still don't feel that I can justify the BA kit when the MM kit is readily available, pretty reasonably priced (IMNSHO) and there's not a whole lot of extra stuff you really need to do to make it a winner, to include using sheet stock and some custom decals to more fully accurize it and open up those landing bays.

I'm one of those modelers who likes to build multiples of a ship, preferring more often than not to steer away from canon ships. The Moebius BSG kits allow me to do that w/o breaking the bank. That and I've already managed to pick up two cheaper than retail - one from a guy trying to thin the herd and another in a trade. I doubt that I'd ever get that lucky with a BA kit. Another bonus is that you can very easily kitbash styrene. Not so much with resin.

All of the above is just my opinion. It's as unbiased as I can make it. I've known Jeff at JT Graphics / BadAzz Models for years and really appreciate the work he does. His product is top-notch. So, when I recommend the Moebius kit over the BA kit, please know that's where I'm coming from and not out to bash the BA kit.

HTH.

Thank you for that well detailed review, that was exactly what I was asking in so little words.

if you are okay with building the PEGASUS right out of the Box with the problems the kit has (zero details on some areas, closed Hangar Bays, etc) then you should go for the Moebius kit.

If you thinking buying the Moebius kit and aftermarket parts to make a better model out of it, or fix its flaws, save yourself the trouble and money and go for the Bad Azz kit.

With respect, you can still buy the Moebius Kit, the Catalyst Creations Pegasus Upgrade Set, the Paragrafix Modeling System Landing Bay set and full flight deck decals from either JT Graphics or J-BOT (I have the latter, custom decals done up for Atlantia) and still come out cheaper than the BadAzz kit. The price difference is - roughly - USD$195 for the MM kit and accurizing parts, $225 (currently) for the BA kit.

Of course, as mentioned, the BA kit is already about as accurate as you can ask for - from all indications - so you would essentially just put it together, paint and put it on display. I don't know that you can light the BA kit, tho. For those who are like me and don't light their kits, that's not an issue.

Again, I'm not telling anyone to NOT buy the BA kit, just offering the potential financial solution differential. Plus, we're all modelers and who doesn't like to "get their hands dirty" building and/or correcting something? Where's the fun in an easy build...? :)
