Kirk's Glasses

Now that I've officially left "Lurker's Land," I'm hoping some of you experts might be able to help me out with a Trek-related question.

Lately I've been working on my TWOK display and thought that adding a pair of Kirk's infamous glasses/spectacles would be a nice, yet subtle touch. The search function didn't seem to turn up much so I thought it was as good a time as any to ask. Do any of you know a good source for antique (perhaps stage or theater) glasses that would at least look similar and not break the bank? Thanks. :)

As I recall in ST IV the guy at the antique shop says they are 17th century American. However, the frames have nosepads and clear guards on the earpieces... this means they are probably just a current (ST IV production year) eyeglasses picked up by the prop dept.

I've been wearing eyeglasses for years now, and currently use an antique wire-frame pair because they are lighter and more comfortable. It always bothered me that Kirk's specs just looked like another pair of glasses.

Of course you could argue bones picked up an old pair and had them retrofitted with nosepads and clear tubing for the arms.

You're right, they really didn't strike me as antique in appearance either. As soon as Trekcore's screencaps are back up, I'll use a few of their close-ups to see if I can't come across something on the contemporary market that looks close in appearance...

Well, I've got the glasses and the case. I picked them up at a convention sometime in late 82 or maybe 83. The case has no indication what so ever as to a who made them.

If I had any idea how to post a picture I'd do it... but frankly I don't have a clue.

I always justified it as being a a couple hundred years in the future when there are not likely any glasses in use anymore, so they would be very rare and possibly "restored" any time in the 18th, 19, 20th, 21st or 22nd century or ebven a few times?

This would explain the inconsistencies (if any) and the vendor in SF may have been just looking at the base frame??

Also, McCoy had to get them in Kirk's prescription, so the lenses had to be found or ground from scratch, so there was certainly work done to them (in my justification.)

:rolleyes
