Re: Map of Skull Island

Original or one of the remakes.

At one point someone was selling copies of the 1933 map.
Scans of the last one where up for a while.

I used a screen cap from the 1933 and used a light table to trace it out than did the whole thing in brown paint and coffee.

I than sanded it and added pastels to weather it up, even added the coffee cup stain (not on original)
One of the first ones I did had bloody finger marks like it was pulled out of someones hand.

Wow! Bravo on that cool looking map. It REALLY looks good. Although I'd pass on the coffee cup stain, I do think it's a nice touch.

So, is that a copy of the original or what? I didn't realize there were different maps floating around.

This is the pic I used of the map from the Original Kong.

I ran it through photo shop to adjust the side angles and enlarge it I think 16" wide (?)
I'll have to dig around my files for all the information including the text.

The Peter Jackson Kong had a very complex 2 sided map with lots of stuff all over it.
I don't remember who posted the original scans.

That's a pretty good sized map. Like I said, I really like the job you did on yours.

Another cool paper prop would be the program book for the Kong unveiling in Manhattan.

Although admittedly it would be a very short program. :sleep

8 PM: Brief introduction by expedition leader Carl Denham.

8:05 PM: Presentation of the Beast.

8:10 PM: Curtain. (Audience is urged to flee in terror if somehow Kong gets loose from his chromium steel bonds. But this is so unlikely as to be impossible).

LOL....:) Yea, I don't think one was ever seen, so you could really go to town on that.

I'll have to keep checking here and keep my fingers crossed that someone would be up for making some more of these maps.

You could even put an add in the program for the company that made the chromium steel restraints. :lol

Actually the inherent absurdity of the theater unveiling in the original film ("here he is folks! G'night everybody!" :lol) was addressed in the Peter Jackson version... in that one, they have a sort of "stage production" dramatizing events from the expedition, with actors standing in for the various participants (the Skull Island natives, for example)... then Kong himself is dramatically revealed.

This to me makes sense and is pretty much the only way it would likely have been done (Denham being the huckster he is, I doubt they'd have a panel of experts from the Museum of Natural History on hand to discuss Kong's animal aspects :lol)

It does however beg the question of how they expected Kong to behave during all this. Don't apes usually throw their crap when they are agitated? :eek

Great maps!

Here's one I made a few years back -

Regarding the info posted earlier for the Skull Island map, there are a couple of of mistakes -

The coordinates are actually 12 South 78 East.

And the text on the island should read "high cliffs"

I actually have a scan of the program prop that were used in the 2005 remake.
The funny thing is that the inside filler text consists of dialog from the original film, and a production pitch for the 1933 film.

Thanks for the info update.
I had gone off what had been posted in the previous thread.
Guess I'll have to update my map.

Nice map DS, was it done by hand or in the computer?
I remember someone selling CG versions some time back.

It was done by hand using the same technique as posted above (Used PS to adjust the size, then printed it out, placed a slightly yellowed paper over it, and traced it on a light table). The shading was done with airbrush.
