Kevin Smith encourages writer to keep writing

Clare Kramer (Glory from Bufffy, among other roles) was sweet enough to compile Kevin's mass of tweets in reply to an author who was struggling to find her motivation to continue on. Like him or lump him, it made me laugh and is, in my opinion, very true.

Enjoy!!! :)

CLARE-ified: I Love Kevin Smith

The fact that he would even respond and in such a way, is why I love him.

I've kept my mouth shut about KS because of all the hate that seems to fly any time his name is mentioned. I like the guy and his body of work.

No, it's not all stellar, but Clerks and Mallrats are personal faves.

I read what he wrote. I never thought of it in such clear terms, but he's correct :)

He talks about his wife's backside to an uncomfortable degree, talks too much, and mentions Nazis in almost every conversation. And he's my hero.

I agree, also Clerks and Mallrats are my favourite Kevin Smith films as well.

I think more than Kevin Smith sometimes it's his most loyal fans defending his works, even the not so good films; makes people hate him even more. Of course after Cop Out got bad reviews everywhere Kevin started to lash out at the critics, that became his real downfall. I really wish he hadn't done that.

He initial movies bought in a new wave of independent cinema. His constant fan interaction along with his frequent tours talking about his films, his interests, his take on pop culture and anything fans threw at him in form of questions and opinions he always answered them straightforward, all that made him a delightful speaker amongst all fans. He is a better public speaker than a film maker.

Red State again hasn't been getting favourable reviews, but I am still looking forward to seeing it. I am still hopeful that he will revive himself and start making better movies, if not I will continue to admire his early works which made me his fan in the first place.

Everything I hear says he's got one more film to do after Red State and then he's calling it. On to continue his internet radio empire :)

Kevin Smith is one of my heroes. I've been fortunate enough to see him live three times over the last 2 years or so... two Q&A's and Red State.

I love his movies. Sure, they're not perfect - but, Chasing Amy has become one of my top movies of all time... and well, Clerks is pretty darn perfect for what it is, too. Red State is a different animal - I can't wait to see it again and really soak it in, it's not your typical Smith flick and I hope some of the folks here give it a chance.

I'm still saddened that his movie directing career is coming to an end. I remember the energy and enthusiasm he had for making movies years ago and it seemed like he'd do that thing forever.

I enjoy the podcasts - they're what I listen to at the gym... but, this internet radio station thing (SIR) has me baffled. Years ago he did a night on some station in LA (with Jason Mewes and Brian Lynch... and an hour with Edgar Wright) that was just killer - I mean, this thing just ruled my iPod for months (and I still listen on occasion)... if I could listen to SIR in my car, I'd probably be all over it. But, it does get a little TMI for me at times.

I'll check out whatever he's putting out. He's part of the Fanboy elite.

I missed him lashing out.

He became pretty vocal about his distaste of 'big Hollywood' mostly due to Bruce Willis' ego/demands. (I think the Q&A 'Too Fat for 40' - available on Netflix - covered that). I think the Cop Out/Willis experience is what began his journey to ending his movie making career.

Wow.. never knew that. Was always a fan of Spaced and Shaun of the Dead. But after Scott Pilgrim, Edgar Wright became one of my current favourite directors. Listening to these two directors would be a blast, I will try to track down that audio file later today.

It was all over his Twitter account during the days prior to and after the release of Cop Out. I stopped following him since then. But I still have him under my other Twitter lists where I look into what is currently tweeting from time to time.

Having a problem with the mainstream Hollywood system is understandable, but getting back at individual critics because they criticized his movie does not come off as a professional artist. Of course he was always doing things his own way most of the times, but every artist needs to accept that not everyone will enjoy your work no matter how truly dedicated you are to your craft.

I've seen "Too fat...." he has nothing but good things to say about Willis.

Just passes on a story about directing him. Doesn't rag on him at all.

Agreed! If anything, it seems like he was a little awed and/or starstruck to work with "the Bruce". I didn't really detect anything negative.

Ok, I said I think it covered it, wasn't sure.... You just need to google Kevin Smith Bruce Willis to find some info on Smith's take on Willis ("soul crushing").

Just a note that some folks might find it rough, or even unprofessional - especially the first hour or so (even the bumper music they came with wouldn't work). I loved the candidness and the whole thing and found most of it to be hilarious. I think Edgar Wright was in the last hour (maybe the end of the second as well). It's like sitting and listening to friends talk... and if you're cool enough, you're in on the jokes.

There was some talk back then that there might be a rotating Saturday night spot for Kevin and other celeb's but, that obviously never happened.

It does become apparent where the SIR name came from... the man says "yes, sir" a lot in this.

"Licking salt off of peanuts."

I love KS as well... I love that every single time I see one of his movies, I notice some subtle joke or little tidbit I've never noticed.

I have to agree with everything he said. As someone who has written short stories, having to create an entire story universe, to have designed heroes and villains, to have ideas of not just epic stories, but small and mundane ones, every bit of what he said in that tweet was true. As a writer, you can't switch things off. My mind keeps seeing potential story ideas, even if they've been done before. They could be for full fledge story ideas, to characters, even to small items featured or mentioned briefly in a story. Like anything we do here at the RPF, be it a prop or a costume or even a model, writing is a project and if you have the fuel for it, you keep working on it.

I believe in Kevin Smith.
