I recently visited the Kansas Underground Salt Museum. It's about 20 min. from where I live. The museum is basically just a tour of a salt mine 650 ft. underground. But, when I visited the museum, I also discovered that the salt mine also contains a company called Underground Vaults and Storage. In addition to business and medical records storage, oddly enough, this company also stores hundreds (maybe thousands?) of original movie props and costumes down in the salt mine. Because the mine naturally remains a year-round temp of 68° and a consistent 40% humidity, it's the perfect place to archive and safely store movie props. They also store thousands of original movie and tv show camera negatives.
In a small portion of the underground museum, they have a few costumes and props on display. Here are a few that I took pics of. Sorry for the quality, but all I had on me was my crappy camera phone.
Some of the props they have on display are:
•Batman costume from Batman & Robin
•Mr. Freeze costume from Batman & Robin
•Agent Smith mannequin from Matrix Reloaded
•Superman costume from the Lois & Clark TV series
•Snowman prop from Jack Frost
•Dorothy II prop from Twister (not behind glass)
•Daily Planet model from Superman Returns
•Wonka Bars from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
•National Enquirer from Men In Black
•Noisy Cricket gun from Men In Black
•Double-Bar pistol from Men In Black
•Tommy Lee Jonses Ray-Bans from Men In Black
•Alien Work Visa props from Men In Black
•Various props from Ali (boxing gloves, several paper props, flyers, etc.)
•Shield from Troy
•Racing suits and helmets from Talladega Nights
If anyone needs close-ups of any of these props/ costumes, let me know and I'll go back and take some detailed shots with my DSLR.
