Just What Was Luke's Plan For Vader??

OK, so it was pretty clear that in ROTJ Luke wanted to swing Vader back from the Dark Side and bring him back to the Alliance with him.

So, let's assume that Vader said "OK" to this proposition, and slapped his mask back on and returned to Endor with Luke....just what was Luke going to do with him??

Vader was, at the very least, a War criminal who murdered thousands, including Jedi podlings/younglings . Would the Alliance accept Vader into their ranks as if nothing happened? Would he use the "I was swayed to the Dark Side defense" like an insanity defense?

It would be like bringing Adolf Hitler back over to the Allies side and asking for him to be accepted because he was "no longer evil" and had been swayed back to the light.

I doesn't really work does it?

Wouldn't the Alliance have thrown him in chains and prosecuted him?

He probably would have put him into hiding a la Obi Wan or Yoda... because you're right, no one in the galaxy would have accepted him.

I would like to think Luke wasn't naive at the point in thinking that Vader could ever have a normal life, even if he somehow got a new identity it'd never be safe. I think Luke was making it up as he went.

I think an interesting thought is, had Luke saved his life and put him into hiding, would he keep the mask like it was on him. He would need it to still live of course, but would Luke have it remade into something a little less menacing and dark. So I wonder what it would look like.

this is actually a awesome question to ask! I'm really excited to see what everyone thinks in this thread!

i once thought luke wanted to convert vader back to beat the emperor and bring back democracy. but like you have said Vader is a war criminal, many people will not forgive him for what he has done. even if he's brought back from the dark side and reborn into the light(my guess is that means his heart is cleansed and the evil gone). i dont think the galaxy understands the nature or rules of the force in the TO... so they would all see this murdering dictator change sides and still not like or trust him...

i think, luke wanted to convert vader, destroy the emperor and then luke and vader run off and hide, maybe train small groups of jedi. keep the jedi religion a secret and very small. pass on what they have learned. Luke would also be considered a traitor, not killing vader and running away with him. so i dont think luke could show his face anymore

this is my own personal belief, I'm curious to what other people have to say and think!

I think Vader would have joined Luke in working to bring about the end of the Emperor, and then himself. No way he goes back to the galaxy. Luke was going to have to defend Vader for a long time... or not, as apparently little Solo runtling never heard grandpa's full story. (what a waste)

yeah he probly wouldn't have wanted to deal with the public after all that.
maybe retire on an island in the middle of an ocean planet eh....

I don't think he would have gone into hiding. In turning back to the Light, he would have wanted redemption. He wouldn't run and hide, he'd face what he'd done and turn himself in. Most likely, he'd be treated as an important political prisoner, kept under lock and key, but not tortured or anything as long as he helped the out.

Sounds the most plausible. He's not the big villain in the eyes of the normal people in the galaxy. He's just another Imperial hunting down the rebels at the command of the Emperor. The Rebel Alliance and the Jedi Order would have the biggest gripes against him. The rest of the people would probably be okay with him killing the ruthless dictator - whom many probably didn't even see as a dictator, but actually loved and thought of as a hero who unified things. Many would probably be sad and angry that the Emperor was toppled, because with him there was stability - disrupted by the Rebel Alliance - and without him there will just come chaos. Dictators are almost worshipped. And the Rebel Alliance will need to find a way to celebrate that Vader helped destroy the Emperor and then they'll just whisk him off somewhere. Doubtful he'll ever be put to trial for his crimes, because he's more valuable to the Rebel Alliance alive with his Intel on Imperial matters, as that is needed to finish things. We see this happen all over the world.

Hell... the general populace would probably be angry at the Jedi Order... because Anakin was a Jedi and looked what he did to the Galaxy.

I think what Luke was trying to do was not turn him to work with the Rebellion. I think in the grand scheme of things he was trying to save his "soul" Not trying to turn this into a religious debate but I think that was all Luke had on his mind was to save Vader and in that regard he did. The Emperor went to his death tumbling down the shaft, you don't see him kicking back with Yoda and Obi Wan at the end of the movie. His soul was lost to the dark side. Vader on the other hand by intervening and saving his son from certain death was his redemption, that and also being the guy who threw the Emperor down the shaft didn't hurt either :) Whatever punishment awaited Vader if he had survived he would have taken because he had finally owned up to his past and rejected it by accepting the Force and turning his back on the Emperor and the Dark side.
