Just saw AVATAR, first time, what the?

Saw it 1 time in IMAX3d. Loved the visuals but hated the story. tried to watch it once on DVD and I couldn't make it through 30 minutes before I turned it off.

I had to see the movie before I could have an opinion, I'm a stickler for things like that.
After falling asleep 4 times trying to watch it, which to this point only the cinematic equivalent to Ambien - Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt was able to do, I made it through it.

I think it looks terrible. The whole thing is so firmly lodged in a creepy Cool World "Implied Sexuality" wrapped in The Uncanny Valley, stuffed in Corny Writing to the point where it might be the perfect Big Hollywood Turd-ducken.

They used Papyrus as the font for everything. It's like looking at a flyer for Taco Day at the Office in 1991. (Which funnily enough, I think was Cameron's last quality work)

Laffo.

I've seen it; thought it was just 'OK'; have no intention of owning it; and will probably watch the sequel, as my mother-in-law (who wanted to see the first one) has expressed an interest in seeing it.

Unfortunately a lot of critisms presented can be applied to the majority of films that have been released within the last 20-30 years.

Star Wars is heavily influenced by The Hidden Fortress; but like Avatar, it's a similar story but again featured in space *yawn* (the sad thing is that most westerners won't have seen The Hidden Fortress, or worse even heard of it), so nothing original there. It has the same old tried and tested characters...the main villain all dressed in black, the wizard mentor etc etc...again something we've all seen before...and thats only the tip of the iceberg; and that was back in 1977.

Avatar cartoony? Stylised more like, surely it's better than muppets in space.

So most criticisms that you direct at Avatar are easily applicable to other films which aren't so cool to hate. I know everyone's entitled to their own opinions, thats fine. But I thought it was interesting to note that certain titles are looked at with rose tinted glasses, even though they are entirely flawed in the same way.

So yeah, the bottom line is...Star Wars is THE HIDDEN FORTRESS...in SPACE!

The line between homage and rip off is thin, and subjective. Star Wars treated its characters better than Avatar. It was also an amalgamation of Hidden Fortress, The Searchers, and other films, all of which recall pretty basic narrative elements of good guys vs. bad guys. It also brought the quasi religious undertones of the Jedi, which made the story even more interesting. To me, Star Wars is both an homage and a reinvention. Avatar failed to meet that standard.

It's a cute and beatiful movie, (which, just like Titanic is not really exciting, cause you really know how it ends) that critisizes humankind for our bad behaviour (again like everything Cameron has made). So, indeed it is 'Pocahontas in space'.
Apart from some cool fighting and flying scenes it's not a 'cool' 'boys' movie, but honestly, if you really hate it you have no heart...

I always thought the heli's looked a lot like the Orca's from Command and Conquer.

and the Scorpion for reference

First thing I thought of when I saw that on Avatar was the Hunter Killer from terminator

I guess that makes me the last one on the planet that hasn't seen it, nor do I intend to.

I haven't seen it either and unless it's free i won't. I'm not giving Cameron anymore money. I only own 3 of his films (T1, T2, Aliens) and as far as i can tell those were his only good ones.

Still haven't seen it. I'm unsure whether I'll ever get round to seeing it, actually, since I think it's probably best appreciated in 3D. I suppose when I finally upgrade my video gear I'll pick up a 3D-capable BRD player and a 3D-capable TV (since the Panasonic I'm eying comes with it anyway), but outside of that, I dunno if it's worth the effort.

But Avatar gets special hate because it was touted as being some kind of giant breakthrough. Some great leap for mankind was implied with words like 'gamechanging.' The media hype was way bigger than for any film in over a decade. Seems to me that visually the film was just the same old same old (LotR, Starship Troopers, Prequels) plus 3D gimmick.

Cartoony, yes. Sub Jurassic Park depiction of reality. Cartoony in the perpetually 'floating', 'swelling' forms of the characters as seen in classic Disney animation. That look is fine for cel animation but I thought cg was supposed to be going for a realistic look. Stop motion looks more realistic in some ways, something I thought I'd never say about 21st Century cgi back in 1993. The most perfect cgi was the T Rex in JP. It's been downhill from there, with the 'gamechanging' Avatar doing nothing much to halt the decline.

QFE. Who'd have thought we'd ever say that stop motion and models look more real, right? But it's true. There's just no getting around it.

I find those "kitteh" panels to be torturous.

Like that "cheezburger" ****.

But, yeah, Avatar... what about it?

Saw it a the cinema and thought it was fantastic! Yes, VERY derivative and, essentially, annoying if you stop to think about it. Which i did....many months passed after the cinema visit and, due to threads discussing and mainly hating the movie, i too began to despise and deride.....

6 weeks ago, i watched it with the Mrs. in 3d on our big telly with oomphing sound...and i really enjoyed it!

I'm actually not sure what my point is:$, probably something in the vein of "...Anger leads to hate....hate leads to..." cobblers, BUT....we could probably sit in front of most flicks cynically going, " cohhh...yeah, right, as if that could happen....ridiculous....etc......"

So....ummm.....so there, that's that.:lol

Yeah, screw what people think on the Internet. You should think for yourself. Or in the case of this show, don't think for yourself.

For what it's worth, which ain't much, I thought it was garbage.

But it doesnt sound so bad if you say that in a French accent.

Garbarggg.

So.....what you're saying is....if I hate something enough, I can get peach cobbler?
