Jurassic Park Velociraptor Footprint Sculpt

Remember the scene in Jurassic Park when Muldoon discovers the Raptors had broken free from their Pen? This is a 're-creation' of one of those prints seen scattered around the pen that Muldoon started tracking.

I have sculpted it in clay (wet clay) and plan to make a plaster cast soon.

The print itself is around 12". The texture is a kinda wet soil/mud. This would make it easier to match most ground types if painted correctly. I've also made the edges of the plate rough and rounded to make it easier to blend in with surrounding sediments. Let me know what you think?

As you can see, the clay right now is very wet. There's water collected in the dips which will give you an idea of what it could look like in rainy conditions. Once this has dried out a bit, I'll seal it and start molding.

UPDATE!

Ok, I have done a quick mold using water based quick-setting alginate (used for life-casting) and have produced 3 plaster copies for painting.

I'm ready to paint these now, but would like some tips on painting soil/sediments in various earth colours so it looks natural. Can anyone help on this?

Thanks :)

Thanks! I may be tempted to do a T-Rex print sometime soon. :love

Oh Ya T-Rex for sure very cool and different project!:thumbsup
Looking forward to the paint!

it's very pitted and rough perfect for dark washes to make up the earth tones,
the washes should sit in there excellent! On all the rough jagged stuff dry brushing will work like a charm!:thumbsup

Thanks. I'm guessing the lighter colours should be dry-brushed, and the darker ones as washes?

When I do the Rex print, I may do both the main road mud effect and the print from the Lost World which is covered with ferns!

Maybe you can use real soil, cover the plaster cast with glue, then put the soil on it and let it dry. Not sure if this would work, but if you gonna try this it would be better to first give the cast a brown/beige base colour, just to make sure that al the white of the plaster is gone.

Yeah, I did think of this and may give it a try if my painting is not up to the job. I'll see if I can get any pics up of my first attempt at the weekend. :)
