There was a very long discussion on the Movie Prop Forum about Jurassic Park promotional canes, crew gifts, and "original" canes used in the film.
I am not really a fan of the film, but have paid attention to the debate, as it seems that "promo canes" have frequently been marketed and sold as "original" (or "screen-used") props used in the film. As an aside, by my definition, promo pieces and crew gifts (as well as post production props) are not "original".
In any event, one of the readers of my website alerted me to this auction, claiming that the amber in rock was not "original" but "
a promotional item given to video stores to promote the Jurassic Park video release". I cannot at this time verify or refute this claim.
However, there is an older topic here on the RPF in which a member posted a photo of a similar-looking amber in rock with the same style mosquito with the flat, "cut out" type of wings:
The original RPF topic is here:
This is a link to the Star Wares eBay auction (which has ended):
Note that the style of mosquito seen in the cane in the same discussion topic is similar to the one seen in the Star Wares amber rock piece:
Below is a compilation I put together from various canes - original, promo, and screencaps:
Below are some images I saved from an eBay auction years ago, which show an entirely different style of mosquito embedded within the amber:
In any event, Jurassic Park is not something I'm personally knowledgeable about, but having read about all these pieces in the hobby, I would definitely characterize any prop from the film as inherently problematic when it comes to authentication, and would recommend getting in touch with a few individuals who have handled original and promo pieces alike, that can make the distinctions.
This is a great opportunity for those with more information and photos to share with the group to bring more clarity to the marketplace.
