Another of my dreams as a kid was having a Johnny 5. I remember when my parents travel asking them for one. they didn't understand what I was talking about. No Google to show them some pictures. many years later.

I bought a Robot V the only thing available on the market who fairly resemble Johnny. Something similar to this one.

I left it in a box for a couple of years and then I remember it. I decided to build it. I started my research looking for detail pictures.
I started by doing a dry fit and comparing the heads robot v is nothing like Johnny 5. I thought maybe I can find some upgrade pieces on the website. I found in Shapeways a few kits for different parts, too expensive for what it was.
Upgrade of eyes and side headpieces.

I start researching for 3d model of Johnny and I found a group on facebook call I Want To Customize My Johnny 5 Toy Robot! this is a fantastic group full of enthusiastic people ready to help and share their knowledge. they also had a 3d model of robot V and a Fully detail scale 1:1 3d model of Jhonny 5

I decided to improve some details of the head to make it closer to the real one.

I also started adding more detail on the track covers I added a 3d print flywheel I found researching on the internet. I wish I could give credit to the person who did this model but I don't know exactly how I came across with this model. If is you or you know who is this person message me and I will happily give credit. I wanted Johnny five to look exactly like in the movies.

I got bit by the what if I change also this and this and this other thing
base new details.jpg

I decided to make my full head so taking as a reference the eyes sockets size of the robot V and with the full scale 3d model made by Andrew Friedberg I model the whole head. Once 3d printed and dry fitted I realize is too big.

I had to resize and change all the dimension to make it 3d printable in the new size

After doing the head I thought why not doing the neck too it will look nicer so I did.

And the shoulders?

At this point, I decide to do the whole torso. I started working on figure it out how to model the parts to be printable and also functional like a toy.

I design and model the waist joint that will work exactly like the one Johnny 5 had.

At the same time, I was working on the 3rd arm the one Robot v had was out of scale and form.
3rd arm 2.JPG

The original Robot V and my new 3d print 3d Arm.
3dr arm.jpg
3d model of the upper torso. All this was modeling thinking in exact dimensions for 3d print purposes and also keeping the original Johnny as accurate as possible.

I wanted as close as possible to the real thing. So the next step arms.

Is been a while. I've been busy with life in general. But here is an update. I recreated the hands to be as closed as the real ones but also strong enough to be position and handle.

I realize that the freewheel was too small so I model a new one.

I 3d printed the details parts for the torso and really started to bother me the size of the cradle. I guess now I have to model and 3d print that too.

I started also working on the tracks. Robot V tracks where really thin and too small for Johnny 5 body.

Johnny 5 is auditioning for other roles. You need to die, Sarah Connor
IMG_3773.JPG

I tried to replicate the cradle with as much mobility as possible like the original one. Always in my mind, it needs to be playable, strong enough to be handled.
Cradle.jpg

After a bunch of trial an errors, I figure out the track system connection to the cradle.
IMG_4179.JPG

I also wanted him to have a functional toolbox so I model a hinge system to make the toolbox open like in the movie. This one broke the tolerances were too tight.

But I eventually figure it out.

I start making the tracks. Time-consuming but I figure it out a small rig to be able to glue the rubber part alway in the same place. only a few more to go.
IMG_4725.JPG

Now was time to figure out the control panel door in the lower torso. I wanted to open and close like in the movies without losing the proportions. Is really small screen and components, plus the arms for the door panel.

Really great work. I've always loved this robot.
It looks very good considering the scale, and resolution of the 3D printer. Nice job!

This is super impressive! Have you thought about using a resin printer to print a higher detailed version once you figure out all the parts?
