John Carpenter and Dan O`Bannons - DARK STAR - A spaced out prop journey

I do know that the beach ball monster has Creature from the Black Lagoon hands, I have a friend that's got and exact replica.

Thats right Dexter, its brought up earlier in the thread, would like to see pics of your friends replica.

"Chicken!?"

"Ah, ham."

Great work! I was going to mention, months ago, that considering the no-budget nature of the production, everything would likely have been off the shelf, probably from a surplus store near USC. (Maybe Supply Sergeant on Hollywood Blvd -- the last time I was there, 15+ years ago, they had a big wall of patches.) Of course, finding the same items now might prove difficult, as you've discovered.

I got the DVD and gave it a look; it didn't strike me as much better, quality-wise, than the previous release, but there's a whole mess of extras--99% of which I haven't checked out yet.

Also, are you sure about that "hex" patch? The one in the photo is a pentagon inside an octagon. :)

Grab off the DVD of Ron Cobb drawing.
Cool to see Dark Star with landing gea

Yes Bob, good ole freezer pops, they must have moved them to make room for Cdr Powell.:lol

Its funny you should mention that, although the quality of the new dvd wasnt as good as i expected, its still a world of improvemrnt on the older version
and allowed me to see that patch a little more clearly.

To me it looks like a rising sun over some sort of rectangle object, what do you think?

I dig it. Something I believe that was mentioned in the novelization (but not in the movie), and hinted at by the size of the bombs relative to the ship, is that the scoutships held only 20 bombs and that after they'd dropped Bomb 20, the crew would be allowed to go home (which could account for Doolittle's rush to find something else to blow up). Which adds a whole 'nother level of bittersweet to the ending. :cry

Good news, Mr Webber!

From left to right:

40th Armored Brigade, currently available on the Bay. (Oddly, the movie patches have an extra yellow line at the lower right.)

California National Guard, subdued, available at Vanguard

I'm still looking for the sunburst patch. Maybe some hippie-era thing? A mandala?

I couldn't have done it without this amazing site: Mike's US Army Patches

What's really humorous is that we've (mostly unwittingly) rehashed this thread from last year: http://www.therpf.com/f24/dark-star-costume-65436/

Now, if I could only manage this level of obsession for my writing... ;)

WOW, thats incredible MFP, thank you so much.

Great news all round especially in the fact that they dont have to be reproduced apart from the stitched nametags. The other thread has had its main mystery resolved as well.
I did search Dark Star before i started my thread but nothing came up.

Once again thanks and a great job.:cool

In some scenes it isnt there, i think its just the tail of the thread being played around with.

Perfect.

And i think you will find the doco Let there be light good enough to make the whole new dvd worthwhile.

The dome is a smokey grey colour and as i need an amber one, is it possible to replicate this dome in clear or amber commercially? Has anyone had similar plastic parts recreated that hasnt cost a fortune?

If it is a too difficult or expensive a process, will let this helmet pass and wait for an accurate one to emerg, a fully tricked Doolittle version would be great for the collection.

While i have any plastic guru`s attention, or anyones, I would love to paint up a 1/6 action figure and encase it in whatever to reproduce Powell in his final journey. Any ideas of how to go about this?

No opinions on the ice, but I will stake my reputation on that being a Visible Man model.

You are on FIRE. great job.
Checked out other pics of it on the net and it looks spot on to me, the calfs seal the deal. Didnt expect to have the same figure used in the movie, awesome.
The only thing i can think of for the ice so far is some cellophane, wire frame, frosted clear coat and a soldering iron to shape something similar perhaps.
Oh, and lit from underneath.

Thanks guys, will look into those. Any ideas what kind of resin or hot glue would be appropriate, id hate to melt the visible man during construction.

First prototype of the Powellsicle,

Just took a run of cellophane and hit it with spray adhesive and folded it in half and crunched up in a ball, sat it on top of an old bottle light base and it looks to have potential.
Dont think i will need a wire frame and the addition of some frosting and the visible man figure should give me what i want.

Got some good weather yesterday so made a start on painting Doolittles helmet.
It was in pristine condition so kind of felt bad painting it but will attach the hoses without cutting into it.

This is where the problem is, this is our present vac, it has the exact hose i need and it is right in front of me. The GF knows somethings goin on and if
i take the easy road, there WILL be ramifacations, will see how it plays out.
