Joe Johnston Concept Y-Wing

While working on a Cooper Star Destroyer, I had an itch to do another Joe Johnston Concept Model

I decided to base it on a different sketch than what Jason Eaton & Lee Ralph used to make theirs

I printed the sketch out on paper scaling the cockpit head to be similar in size to Studio Scale, then drew in the body basing it on a sketch that Ralph McQuarrie had made for his hanger painting

I then copied the outlines onto PVC Foamex board & began cutting & gluing

Thanks scotthothpatrol, its a PVC board thats used for sign making,... quite light, easy cut with a blade, can be sanded, filled, drilled, just glue it together with superglue

Different brand names around the world, in UK, Foamex or Foamalux

Thank you Hagoth

Applying your skills to bring to life unique variations of these awesome space ship designs. Artist sketches have their own special character. That, comes out in the creation a model. Thanks.

Thanks John I will have to check out that material. 48th Ronin chimed in with the US name

Back in 1979, Testors had a flying model with a tiny engine that looked to be based on the Y-wing. It was the Testors GALAX IX Spacefighter…something worth looking at. It, the Starbirds…and the Autobot ship based on it all draw from the Y-wing and would look great in formation with each other. I remember toys from the 1980s where you had X-wing style F-16 toys. I haven’t seen those in years.

Ha, my mate has that Star Bird toy on display in his living room, I asked him take a photo of it

Always liked that design...specially the top turret. Very sleek compared to the other 99% of the rest of the look ;)
Thanks Joberg,...I'm going to try & keep the sleek look on the rest of the ship
