JJ ABRAMS Enterprise

the uss buttuglyprise is a real shame
the gold and blue and red is nice to see again but the stark white bridge is a crying shame all is lost all is lost

OK now THIS is interesting. Ryan Church's design sketch for the new Enterprise.

I like Ryan's art CONSIDERABLY better than what they ended up with.

For one, Ryans's is the TOS Enterprise. It just is. It's been modified, changed, extruded like taffy. But still recognizable.

The final ship, is a pastiche. Not a single part of it, says TOS Enterprise. The recognizable bits are all from the Refit seen in the earlier movies.

And the rest.. the secondary hull and engines are MORE distorted, the annoying blue lights are everywhere.. it's just a bunch of stuff glued together.

The Ryan design still has a little of the old dignity. I might have gotten used to her. But it was not to be.

EDIT: actually I'm not entirely sure this came first or not... it may be just a "what if" drawing. In any case I like it better than the final. :lol

In the history of Star Trek, I can think of no other time that any vessels were designed like this during the TOS time period. IMO, This should have been a next retrofit Enterprise NX.

I saw the movie and enjoyed it BUT it felt more like "just entertainment" rather than filling a gap in time in the Star Trek universe.

That's because at no other time in the ORIGINAL timeline did they look like Abrams' Enterprise. This is an alternate timeline with alternate expressions of the development of the same technologies. It's right there in the dialog and it's also backed up in Star Trek: Countdown.

The original Trek Universe is still there, the Mirror Mirror Universe is still there and now the Abrams' version of the Trek Universe is there. What was the story where Worf was jumping from universe to universe and things were different in each? Same idea.

easy way to think of it, is that there was a massive unexpected attack which destroyed the USS Kelvin.... maybe after that Starfleet stepped up their developement of ships/weapons to deal with the possible new threat which they knew nothing about.

Wouldn't be that dissimilar to what happens in our own timeline.

It was probably the early introduction to the Romulans kick started by what Hunky proposes. Earth blames romulus for the Kelvin incident since they don't know any better. A 'cold war' of sorts starts to brew between the two (federation/romulan) culminating in a sort of technological race, hence why this Enterprise is a bit more advanced and different looking.

I thought this same thing.
Some scientists believe that if you build a time machine and travel into the past an kill your grandfather it would create a paradox.
How did you build a time machine if you were never born.
Other scientist believe that you will create an alternate timeline with a different outcome.

Blacked out for possible spoilers:

The events that happen in the beginning of the film did not happen in TOS.
This caused different technologies to be produced and changes in the design of the Enterprise.

Who knows...Maybe they will take the Star Trek franchise in the direction of the Alien and Predator franchises.

Assign a new director to each new film with a different outlook of the future of Star Trek.

Someone may come along later and fix this mess...or make it worse.

If they put Ripley in the mix, the entire Star Trek crew is screwed. A phaser is no match for a pissed off female with a pulse rifle or a Predator with an oversized weed whacker and cloaking device... LOL

This actually reminds me a weird idea about a Predator/Trek mix I had in mind for a comic...
:D
