JJ ABRAMS Enterprise

Re: New Enterprise? What the H@*$

Don't feel bad. You were probably overcome by a multitude of gut wrenching feelings upon seeing the Abomination Class Heavy Cruiser for the first time.

Why am I the only one apparently not disappointed? Did we want to see the same ship from the '60s, with the straight nacelle columns and red doo-dad intake thing on the front?

I like it. I like it, and I understand his point of view (Abrams).

Re: New Enterprise? What the H@*$

Well, again sorry for rehashing an olready posted topic. :unsure

My thing is it looks like he tried too hard to make a classic design look new. It doesn't work for me. Now if someone said it was the new ship from "Galaxy Quest 2", I might like it a little better. As is, it looks like a cartoon caricature.

.

YES, Damnit!!

Because that's the way it WAS.

Upgrade the texture a bit to make it more believable in the close-ups, perhaps, but leave the darn shape alone.

Don't attack me, for heaven's sake. I mean, I see your point....but also Abrams'.

If the movie is good, then all this should be forgiven, right?

Pretty much. Ah what the heck, a direct copy would have seemed out of place, although the one in "Tribbles and Tribulations" wasn't bad.

EXACTLY.
Not a direct copy per-Se, clean the ole girl up some, but don't turn her into a cartoon characterization.

NOT an attack on you.
....and no, all will not be forgiven.
As I will never forgive "Greedo shooting first" or "Midichlorians".

Abrams "Point", is the same kind of "point" that has ruined movies like "planet of the Apes" and "The Time Machine", to name but a few.

Agreed.

Someone like Manny Coto should have done the next Trek, and it should have been a series.
He is a life long Trek fan, and even had gotten Enterprise turned around, though it was too late.

Oh well. It's done now.

I still have hope that Trek will return to TV.
Hopefully nothing rehashed and something fresh and respectful.

It's up on youtube, not hard to find at all.

I wasn't expecting to see this trailer when I went to Quantum of Solace, and for the life of me, I thought the opening bit with the car going over the ledge, and the kid jumping out was from a new Michael Bay film.

This is definately going to upset - terribly upset - old school fans. This is not Trek as we have ever seen it.

Personally, I liked the trailer. The shots of Kirk moving past the hulking structures in the distant mist reminded me of old Syd Mead, Hildebrant styles of imagery.

I still don't like Pine as Kirk though.

Re: New Enterprise? What the H@*$

I'l reserve my final judgement when I see more of this, but as I was looking at the picture it seemed as if somebody was trying to combine the Movie era Enterprise with the worst of the TNG Enterprise.

Re: New Enterprise? What the H@*$

Manny Coto???

The guy who directed Star Kid, and Dr. Giggles?

No thanks.

I'm on board with the reboot so far. The new trailer isn't quite what I expected, but I'm ready to see the film.

Sure, people have something called careers, resumes, and bills to pay.

The dude turned Enterprise around no question.
Those mirror universe episodes with the TOS Defiant were fan pleasers to be sure.

Point is, the guy was a life long Trek fan and he knew what that fans wanted and did it. That is what I base it on, delivery of the goods.
Respectful of what went before.

Re: New Enterprise? What the H@*$

What's particularly galling, is that AST (Abrams Star Trek) seems to want to evolve directly from "Star Trek Enterprise", which is bad enough in itself :lol, but even THEY established that the familiar Constitution Class cruiser DID IN FACT EXIST!

We could argue all day about "Defiant", because technically she comes from "our" TOS universe into a "mirror" STE universe... neither one of which is Archer's usual timeline...

But the final episode of STE ends with a montage of ships that came after, and good ol' TOS Enterprise is right there on the screen!

Re: New Enterprise? What the H@*$

It's amazing how well the TOS bridge held up too on Enterprise.

It worked. They animated some of the screens better, it looked more alive.

Real balls from Hollywood would be to make a retro Trek.

Now they do retro future films sometimes.

What is wrong with a retro Trek?

Yeah you can add some stuff, but keep that familiar look and feel.

Show things up closer, show details you never dreamed were there to add complexity and advancement to the tech.

All the old ships can be made to look real as all hell with todays FX.

I think people write off such a thing too easily.

A new TOS era series, written well, casted well, with a new crew would really be a blast I think.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me what is really wrong with that image? I mean, I see it and think "Star Trek". Isn't that what the director is going for?

Re: New Enterprise? What the H@*$

I have been watching similar threads on other forums.

My biggest surprise was that the XI ship looks so much like the previous movie versions.

As much as I would have liked to have seen an XI Enterprise that looked like a face-lift of the TOS design, I am open to whatever they come up with.

But they had, in essence, a clean slate.

In other words, they could have updated the TOS version.

They could have used movies for inspiration.

But what I thought they might do is something that deviated from either influence...or was at least inspired by the TV design but took it to a different place.

Instead, the final ship looks like a retooled movie version.

I wonder if this was a deliberate choice? If design team said, okay, uniforms will be influenced from TOS TV series, ships and interiors from movie.

What I was hoping for was the design team to say, "Okay, we've seen the TV series and the movies....but the story we are telling is set in the TV era, so let's make sure ALL designs -- costumes, props, sets, ships, etc. -- use the TV series design as inspiration, and throw everything else out the window.

But for whatever reason, Paramount design department never calls me to ask my opinion on such stuff. :)
