JJ ABRAMS Enterprise

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I'm glad they never used the McQuarrie designs! Those things hurt my eyes whenever I see them!

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

What I love is that the entire design of the Ent-E was "fixing" the impracticalities of the TOS/Refit original, and if the lists on this thread are anything to go by, it's one of the least liked designs (I forget which DVD had the discussion with the designer on the changes, but it's classic. "Why would the neck be so small?")

My favorite sci-fi ship design is and always has been the Refit. I love that they're replicating that to some degree, and will respect that this photo is apparently at a bad angle. It doesn't line up well with the front-on pic, and the back apparently extends a bit but is rounded enough that you can't see it from this angle. So I'll wait til I see the trailer tomorrow.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

I like a ship where it seems like the production designers have spent at least an afternoon thinking about this stuff.

Agreed.

Ironically, far more time, effort and money was devoted to the re-design of XI’s Enterprise than was ever allocated to the original.

For better or worse, the most recent incarnation of the Enterprise is not the product of a short-staffed, under-funded, or overly rushed art department. Contrary to popular belief (in some quarters), these guys are not altogether lacking in talent or intelligence, and they took this particular assignment very seriously. Conceptual and stylistic choices were made for a reason. One may not agree with those choices, but trust me, this isn’t a case of under thinking the problem. In fact, based on what I’ve seen and heard, I strongly suspect the opposite to be true.

On a semi-related note, it amazes me that so many fans have misinterpreted the contours of the new ship based on that one photograph. It’s like a single framed, real-time version of Rashomon.

YOU supplied the profile, brother, which clearly indicated the proportions issues. :) I saw that profile in the screencap, but then again, that's what I do for a living. Anyway, I thought your profile was demonstrative and useful, and I can only assume from the path markers it was traced from a reliable reference.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

From a purely budgetary point of view.

Wouldn't it have been better to not spend ANY money re-designing the costumes, ships, phasers, etc., and spend that money on story and actors.

Enough money has aleady been spent trying to second guess the one Star Trek that was monsterously successful, THE ORIGINAL. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Reliable enough.

Unless the design/FX team has recently made major changes -- changes they are keeping very, very, very secret.

Based on the publicity image that doesn't appear to be the case. Then again, this has been a weird production, and I suppose anything's possible.

)

In this case it was not an either/or scenario.

But, yeah, for reasons I've already mentioned, I wish they'd stuck closer to the original designs.

Ah, well, there's always Trek XII...

Sorry, I wasn't referring the legitimate design issues that have been raised. My beef is with those (cough cough, Rick Sternbach, cough cough) who are incorrectly extrapolating the profile based on the (admittedly misleading) publicity shot. I know Rick, and he should know better.

...and those Star Trek fanfilms which are absolutely faithful to TOS's costumes, and ships, and... boy, those are real watchable aren't they? Those don't make you want to gouge out your eyeballs at all.

I haven't watched New Voyages since one episode actually made me throw up in my mouth a little. And that Elvis Kirk guy got to be in the new movie.....

Yes they do. I blame it on really POOR lighting and writing, certainly not the production DESIGN. And some atrocious acting.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

You know, I rather like the saucer section... Maybe they'll have to seperate the primary and secondary hulls during the big battle at the end, the ugly part will get blown up, and the movie will end with the saucer in drydock being plugged onto the right body. :D

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Just a quick sideview comparison using images from http://www.merzo.net/ and the sideview of the new ship from this thread scaled to have the same saucer diameter as the refit Enterprise and one scaled to the TV Enterprise .

Those are some big engines.

I had a die-cast model of the original by my bed growing up - loved it. But that 6 minute fly-around of the refit - which wasn't A, by the way, just 1701, was a beautiful serenade of a beautiful ship.

Re: JJ AMBRANS Enterprise

Agreed.

I just can't believe a Director with the chance to produce a equally compelling flyby of the ship that started it all, would pass up that chance. That should be the goal. It's the respect it finally deserves. Put it ON THE BIG SCREEN.

Ok, I sat here for about 5 min with the edit thread window open and "JJ ALLBRANS ENTERPRISE" written as the title... MAN, I was SOOOooo tempted... :lol

True story :$

Cheers,
