Jeyl's Expensive Decision Dilemma Part II

If this is the wrong place for this topic, my apologies.

Well, it's almost Comic Con time and with the budget for the convention reducing my expenditures to an all time low, I'm left with little choice in how I'm going to handle two major products that have recently been announced. Unlike last time it's not two Men In Black weapons from two different movies, and I don't think either company in this dilemma is going fall off the face of the Earth without notice. So here we go.

Factory Entertainment's Noisy Cricket

Looks to be a very solid replica. Until the LED lighting issue gets resolved, I'm kind of tempted to add more to my Men in Black replica library with the Neuralizer and the Sidearm. Not only does this lovely lady sport a working trigger, but also a working hammer that lights the replica up when pulled. That alone just oozes with Role Playing potential.

Probably the biggest downside is it's price, size and durability. For a replica with moving parts and electronics all crammed into it's small body, I've never felt this Will Smith quote from the film to reflect how I feel about it.

"I feel like I'm going to break this damn thing!"

But if Factory Entertainment's craftsmanship is consistent with their previous products, this should be a treat. Hopefully I'll be able to see this beauty up close at Comic Con next week.

ED-209 from Hot Toys

When it comes to price, this will definitely give you more mass for your buck. Standing just a little over one foot tall, this new release of ED-209 is more screen accurate than the last model, has more articulation and even comes with an electronic voice.

Normally I don't bother with Hot Toys with the exception of the soon to be released Ada Wong figure, but ED-209 is just an awesome sight to behold, carrying both the grim natures of it's featureless presence and the dark humor of it's tiny but deadly gun arms.

When I look at what I have now in my collection, I ask myself "Do I have enough replicas of guns? How about a replica of a robot with guns?" I don't know. I'm sure the hard core replica fans will no doubt be in favor of the cricket, but when the two are about the same price, it's hard not to find the non-replica tempting.

I never really liked the cricket. I figured it was just a movie gag to get some laughs.

I suppose it comes down to if you want a tiny gun you can hold and shoot, or a robot you can set up.

Personally, I would go for the ED-209. I like both movies, but the robot trumps a toy gun in my eyes.

I need to see a pic of the ED-209 in the film. Something doesn't look right on the mouth.

Despite what my avatar might suggest, I'd go with the noisy cricket. HT will probably release yet another ED209 in a few years anyway.

$20 says it's the lighting. Sideshow likes to shoot as much light at their products as possible. And hey, it could have been worse....

Always a possibility. Cripes, just look at how many TDK Jokers they've released. Are we up to five now? It's insane. But when it comes down to what more they can do with ED209, there's not a whole lot. One of the big reasons for this new edition is due to the fact that the last ED209 Hot Toys did was grossly inaccurate. The left arm canon had two machine gun barrels when it was supposed to only have one, and the the paint jump was plain and overall weird. They put fuzzy highlights on the screw holes that just made it look cheap. Not only does this rendition have the correct left arm, a bonus destroyed right arm canon and that little sensor thing that flops forward before ED fires one of his rockets, it also has more articulation.

The only way I can see Hot Toys justifying another ED209 is if they do a Robocop 2 edition where he comes with a manhole for his foot to be stuck in, or a RoboCop 3 edition with an extending computer component from his leg and the phrase "I am now authorized to... be loyal as a puppy". Aww, and you are like a puppy ED209.

But that Neca rendition... Hmm. I'm going to have to ponder on that one.

I think it is that sticker for the mouth being too well lit up in that photo. Looking at screen caps, the mouth shape appears correct, just the detail is not as visible. Price aside, it is one cool toy.

Another bit that just dropped ED's points. Someone talked about how his dome head is a bit too high.

Hmm. Now I know I've got to see this sucker at Comic Con just to see how bad it is.

It does appear higher, but not objectionably higher. The mouth looks better from this angle too. Just the asking price ($400?) is allot for any replica if it is not 99% correct.

It's kind of funny regarding the "deal" or "no deal" seems to stem from one having a head that's a bit taller, and another that's lacking a green garden hose.

I didn't notice the head being taller until you showed that image. Like all replicas, there seems to always be something not quite right. Hey there are even differences between hero and stunt on actual screen used props, so you can always justify your purchase or a replica that way I suppose. In the end of the day it is an expensive ED-209 toy, not a screen used miniature.

I've decided to go with the Noisy Cricket. While the ED-209 looks wonderful, the model I saw at Comic Con didn't really impress me. The grill felt under detailed, the head looked much taller than it does in the pictures, and the size of the model made me feel a bit uncomfortable when figuring out how to actually move it around with it's articulation.

The Cricket looked and felt a lot more fun.

I bought a neuralizer from Factory Entertainment at the con.
As I was there, the owner came out and recognized me back from when I would do appearances as Vader for Master Replicas. Turns out he is running Factory Entertainment now.
Had a great time talking to him about their prop lines. I really wanted a neuralizer and after being able to handle one first before buying, I was impressed with the weight and functionality so I bought it at the con. Instant gratification :)
