Jedifyfe's Wearable NIKE MAG Upgrade DISPLAY VIDEO

Hey all, I don't know If anyone has touched on this and If they have I apologise for repeating but I thought it'd be helpful to those who want to do conversions. I've seen a lot of converters, Jedi included, who use a knife to remove the waffle grip from the shoe. A much easier and way quicker way is to use a hot air gun (the same you use to remove wallpaper) as it melts the glue without damaging the shoe. You can see from the pic what I mean.

That's awesome lammy. Do you just heat gently from the outside and when it peels off, does it come off clean like that, or do you still have to scrape the bits of rubber off the yellow sole rubber?

Wish us lot knew all these little tips when we first did our conversions. I was sat in a room for weeks trying to figure out how to do a lot of this stuff :lol

Yeah dude, just leave it on the first setting and run over the first flap going back and fourth for about 10-15 seconds. It'll get a bit warm obviously but all you have to do is gently peel and tug as the glue lifts right up. Just keep it to little bits at a time and it'll come off like butter, no need to cut anything at all. This way there's no damage to the shoe and it'll be the best way to remove if anyone decides to change the sole completely.

Well I had a look on here before I started my KMAG conversions and saw that people were cutting into it but I didn't think it was the best way to go about it so I juuts got the old heat gun on it :)

Only issues I've got at the minute are:
*What glue to use to glue the shoe back together as I'll need a strong yet flexible resin (may just go with araldite)
*How to set up the lighting system on my mark poon mags-On my KMAG's I've used electronics from elwirecraft just to avoid soldering but it leaves me with the problem of the chunky connections which is no good for wearing. I need and inverter that runs off of a 9v battery like this http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i475/st200rich/nike air mag/IMAG0665.jpg but the only one I can find is from elwirecraft which brings me back to the chunky connector problem. I'll basically be running el strips in the strap and sole, but I don't know wether to go with LED's for the heel cup or not seeing as I haven't done any circuit making since college.

Awesome the way that came away. Did you remove the entire sole this way as well?

Unfortunately you can't remove the foam sole away from the KMAG shoe using the gun as all it does is cause the foam to expand. I had to use a craft knife to remove it as it was glued down a lot more securely than the mark poon MAG.

Thanks for that. So confirming what TheNickFox says about these shoes.

Yeah, the KMAG's are a bit of a pain. Not impossible though. If you take your time with the knife and cut close to the upper shoe as possible without going through it, you'll be fine. I've nearly finished the conversion on my KMAG's, I just need to get a different inverter and I may end up cutting off the connector plugs and soldering the wires if they hurt my feet. We shall see.

Do you have a thread running on this?

No I don't dude, I'll do a progression thread once they're done. Only thing is I don't think I'm going to bother with the heel LED's with the KMAG's. I've got another connection spare just in case I change my mind though

hi
do you have any pics of your conversion to the kmags?
if so, just put them up in the knockoff mags thread.

since there are a few trying to convert the knockoff mags, it would be really helpful to see as many pics as possible

thanks

also, a question for jedifyfe and anyone who's got the mark poon or the real official mags.

Does anyone have any really high quality close up pics of the top part of the official nike mag?

how is the grey outer fabric connected to the top upper leather piece on them?
is the grey outer fabric just glued on to the main puffy foam filled leather upper piece?

this is the bit im confused on. I assume the Mark Poon's are glued on as well?

The top white part on the mark poon mags is a cotton like material, not pleather like the KMAG's. It's stitched on but the stitch is hidden by the fold. I'll try and post some pics up in a bit of my progression. Made a few mistakes mind you and I'm only using them as a trial and error pair. My mark poon ones are the ones I'm taking more time with. I'll probably make another pair of KMAG's in the future but i'm busy enough at the minute with these two conversions.

Glad you found this thread! I was about to email you to ask if it was okay to post that very image here!

Thanks for helping out those of us who can't spring for the real deal!

Of course, its because of all you guys I even got in to all this as much as I did. This place became an obsession for me for a while after I did the hovering hoverboard project. But now I got my perfect outfit for comicon in a couple weeks. :)

WOW that is one impressive outfit Dondula7.

Is it possible to post an image with the strap pulled out (in big loop, don't go pulling it out of the buckle) so we can see the collar a bit better? From what I can tell, the white part has been stitched, the outer fabric pulled up and glued in place, then the white part glued to that. I am guessing there is no stitch seam under the strap or is there?

I just took this with my phone, so I hope the quality is good enough, my DSLR battery is dead. Is this the area you're talking about. Jedi let us know if we are spamming your thread :cool
