Jedifyfe's Wearable NIKE MAG Upgrade DISPLAY VIDEO

If Nike are releasing the MAG as a full profuction shoe this is something they'd need to improve on as I could see the two pieces seperating

I think we'll see Black & Decker's "hydrator" before we see NIKE release the MAG for commercial release. Whilst I like the MAG, it don't quite get its functionality. It is certainly not a "sports" shoe.

It's function is respect and nostalgia to the best trilogy of all time. They would sell like hot cakes, although I do agree, it's a weird sporty shoe.

There is CLEARLY going to be a 2015 power laced release. It has been confirmed on an interview with Bob Gale and MTV. Also, the fact that they called the initial release a '2011 Nike Mag'. What's interesting, is that Bob mentioned that Nike wanted to stagger the releases, and that the 2011 Mags were just the beginning. Rumours suggest that there will be another release between now and 2015 with another model for general release without power laces.

I am not even sure if the shoe was intended for sport or just another of the (33?) product placements in that film. The letters MAG stand for Magnetic Anti-Gravity and there was supposed to be a scene shot where Marty uses the shoes to walk on the ceiling. Technical limitations at the time prevented it from being shot. I also read this scene was part of some form of future sport and was axed because it detracted from the "mission" of saving his son.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. Power laces should have been made, even if not on these shoes. I mean here we are in 2012 with amazing technology and yet our shoes are still being secured with a piece of string :confused

NIKE should have released the MAG (or a version of it) back in 1989 instead of competing with REEBOK for the inflatable shoe.

Totally had these when I was 11, thought they were the most amazing things ever, can't believe how bulky they actually are looking back on them now.

If Nike releases a power laced shoe in 2015 I wonder if they would make it look the exact same as the movie shoe. Wouldn't that take away the whole purpose of making the 2011 mag. Why would they release such a limited collectors item only to trump it a few years later with a possible wider release, I know I'd be pissed being a mag owner but I guess thats the risk you take. I think I read or heard somewhere that they actually wanted to do a whole Mag line with possible different designs and functions. It will be interesting to see what they end up doing though.

The only way I wouldn't be pissed off, is if they offered the original owners and current owners the power laced versions at a very good price.

Yea I heard that too, not exactly like the movie but with power laces. I think that idea sucks, we all wanna see power laced air mags just like the film.

My personal guess is that we won't be seeing any more Mags from Nike for a VERY long time.

Now the hat and jacket on the other hand...

Nike also made those for the film, and Parkinsons could always use some more money...

Just a thought. I think we may be seeing the rest of the wardrobe before any more Mags get made.

My main reason for believing this: the shoes are complex enough. Even without power laces, they each had to be hand inspected due to the complicated nature of the electrics. A wider release inevitably introduces a greater likelihood of failure for the workings. I'm not sure they'd risk their reputation on that for something that only has a limited appeal anyway.

The "Powerlaces coming 2015" sounds like tongue-in-cheek marketing, just like the Mattel guys talking about putting things on the Hoverboard boxes saying various features coming in 2015. The tongue-in-cheek nature would have been more obvious if the shoes were introduced back in '89, but being so close to "the year" it softens the blow and makes it seem realistic. Couple that with every video unboxing taking this quotation and repeating it, and you have a BIG rumor mill churning.

Mag owners, I'd say your limited edition will stay that way...if not, I'll eat one of the Diamond Select hats!

I would suspect that we MAY see the MAG's released without electronics. I believe that is the only reason that NIKE wouldn't want to release them. Just from a quality control standpoint.

Power laces?....I don't think we will ever see those.

That would make sense and allow the shoe to be "affordable".

Working on this plastic ankle buckle, and unless it is made enormous, there is just nowhere to mount the motor in there. The idea of the shaft in the sole could work, but how much tension would it provide?

not to get off topic but seeing those old Nike pumps just reminded me of how crazy I got over every gimicky shoe starting from the age of 8, I guess it all culminated with the mags.

It all started with the Reebok twilightzone pump, I thought I would be able to jump twice as high

then it went to the Nike pumps pictured in the post above, then to the shaq insta pumps with the co2 cartridges, why I thought it was cool to cary around a CO2 pump is beyond me.

Then the LA Gear Lights

And the LA Gear Tech, which I consider to be the grandfather to the mag

I guess no matter how old I get, these types of things still get me.

I think that the MAG actually started the whole hi-top thing in the late 1980's/early 1990s.

hi,

for longevity, is using solder for the tape wire to el sheet (nike logo for strap) connection better than using wire glue?

im thinking of soldering mine and then taping it up.

or will it not make much difference if wire glue is used to fix the tapewire to elsheet?

also, does anyone have a pic of the wire glued tapewire to the el sheet (for the nike logo).

Lastly, sorry for sounding dumb but this el sheet stuff, i have another question!

i just received some cuttable el sheet, and it has 4 double pin silver connections around it for easy soldering to the wires.

But once you have cut out your 4 shapes and these pins are then used up, for the remaining el sheet, do you then have to solder onto the panel itself or glue new connecter pins for each bit?

I would like to use up all the bits on the el sheet if possible. Just not sure whats the process. Would it just be a matter of buying some sticky copper tapewire and then soldering that to the el sheet?

thanks

Yes, you can buy Wire Glue and glue the wire directly to the tabs.

ok so once ive used up my 4 bits of el sheet cutouts with the pin connectors on them.

for the rest of the cuttable el sheet, the bits without pins, i just put wire glue directly onto the el sheets pos/neg points?

if you get any bit of wire glue onto the other bit of the el sheet connection, does this automatically short the connection?

im looking for the easiest option. I know that soldering would be very difficult directly onto the el sheet without those connector pins.

That is correct and yes it can create a short if the glue leaks but it won't destroy the sheet.

I tried soldering directly to the tabs and it won't stick. Wire glue is your only answer.

I had the same EL sheet as this. You can get them with metal tabs on ALL tabs, but the cheaper ones tend to have 4 sets of metal tabs, so 4 shapes can be cut. You could get some small metal tabs and clamp them through yourself, but it's very fiddly work

Mine failed also, so I gently heated the metal tabs (as they're very delicate) and folded them around the wire then soldered. Very secure, but Brad is correct, wire glue is a neater option. Both options have pros and cons.

just a question on the elastic fabric you got jedifyfe?
do you have any close ups of it?
whats it called?

im looking for similar elastic with nice look to it

Are you referring to the fabric that I was using on my NIKE MAG's or the Elastic Straps I used for the laces?
