Jayne's Blue Sun tequila bottle

OK, so this is one of the seemingly simpler props I want to make... but the trick is getting the right bottle. I've read about other's success with the Cabo Wabo bottles:

-but from the ones I've seen in person the glass doesn't look blue enough... it's more of a teal. Also, I didn't think the lip was so much wider than tall. I found another brand, Amate, that had generally the same shape as the Cabo Wabo bottle, but it was a darker (cobalt) blue and a slightly shorter neck:

Is this more accurate? I need some good screenshots of that scene if anyone wants to help me out. There's another one, Raza Azteca, that sorta in between the two:

-but that bottle is textured, and a little too short. I guess any of the three would work, but that's not quite enough to be satisfied with. I guess I could buy all three to see them side by side, but that'd be an expensive party. ;)

This is about the best shot I've seen and to me it appears to be the Cabo bottle. The difference in color may just be lighting and post processing.

In the screen cap, the mouth rim of the bottle seems more rounded, like the Raza. The Cabo bottle has a tapered mouth rim. The Cabo bottle has the otherwise correct shape and neck length, but the mouth seems off.

Unless there are multiple types of Cabo tequila that come in different bottle types. Of course, current bottle types may not match what was in production at the time the show was filmed.

This one is close...

Aguila Anejo (difficult to find)...

Aguila Reposado (much easier to find)...

It even has a similar cork.

I have, and am converting the Cabo Wabo bottle, there are a few things to note about that particular bottle. Mainly that the graphics are painted on and a b.tch to get off. Folks are using wire wheels on grinders to do it, then taking it to the buffing wheel. I have yet to try this. The other thing is that I took it with me (with Whitefall's free-at-PropCircle labels on it) to the charity screening on Joss's b'day, and the color of the liquid on the big screen looked the same to me as the liquid in the bottle in my hand. (I hadn't had a chance to empty it before hand, so I was doing that at the show.)--jdd

Hero, I've read that about the Cabo bottles... must have been some sort of industrial strength enamel. I think I'm going to be on the lookout for that Aguila - the lip looks better, and the color seems closer (though it may have been the post changes like SurferGeek mentioned). Looks like I'll need to check out BevMo.

The Aguila Reposado bottle I posted is darker than it really is - it's actually the same color as the Aguila Anejo bottle above it. Most of the Aguila Reposado pics I found were smaller, so when I found the larger, I linked it.

It's not a cheap bottle of tequila. Jayne has good booze taste. :lol

If any needs help with their project (emptying the bottle) just let me know. I'm happy to contribute to the community :thumbsup

If you look at how Jayne is holding the bottle, you can see his finger positions mean the neck is probably at least an inch shorter than the Cabo Wabo neck...unless he has MASSIVE hands and sausage fingers.

My money is on the Aguila Anejo bottle, it looks to have the same shape and the neck is a much closer length. The Aguila Reposado would be my second choice, followed by Cabo Wabo for a close enough solution. I read a bit about Aguila tequila and the Anejo stuff was what they originally made but for some reason stopped making it, then a new company bought Aguila in 2002 and now the tequila is called Reposado...so that means if they used an Aguila bottle for the show it would have had to have been the older design, the Anejo bottle. Unless I have the story completely wrong.

Again, the Aguila brand tequilas use the same colored bottle for the Anejo and Reposado.

Here's some info...

Añejo (aged) tequila is, as the name implies, aged in wooden barrels for a minimum of one year and sometimes as long as five. Generally the term "añejo" is reserved for 100% agave tequila but there are occasional exceptions. The most notable being "Sauza Commemorativo Añejo" which is a mixto ( mixto tequila is blend of agave and other sugars.)
...
Reposado is Spanish for 'rested' and though the term could be used for a 100% agave or a mixto it is mostly used for the former. To become a reposado the tequila must be rested in wooden tanks or barrels for a minimum of two months. It can be rested as long as eleven months ( a year or longer and it is classified as tequila añejo ) but is usually not done for more than six.

Here's a better pic of the Reposado bottle:

You're going to have to drink a lot of tequila to get us all bottles. ;)

I wish this thread had come up before I got a Cabo Wabo bottle. The Aguila bottles have changed just a little bit from the Anejo to the Reposado but they are close enough that I would be happy with one...anyone got any empties they want to get rid of?

Cool thread. I may have to consider this the next time I'm at the liquor store. ;)

BTW, it looks to me that the Blue Sun decal on the prop is opaque, which suggests to me that the original tequila labeling was not removed, just covered up.

I was looking around, and it seems the thin lip is the new style on most bottles... and the Aguila ones have it too:
56.gif

So either it was the old/rarer style with the thicker lip, or it did use the thin lip like the current bottles we've found. And since we don't have a clear shot of the lip without his hand in the way, I'll concede that the thin lip might be right. It looks close enough I guess. I still think it should be a darker blue than the Cabo bottle, so I'm on the hunt for the Aguila Reposada. I may just order it online, that's a pretty good deal Great_Bizarro found.

OK, small update... went to the largest liquor store I could find and still no luck outside the Cabo bottle, which I still think is the wrong blue. So I'm just going to order it online now.

Re: Jayne's Blue Sun tequila bottle

I picked up a bottle on ebay. Anyone got the labels please? Thanks :thumbsup

Re: Jayne's Blue Sun tequila bottle

Anyone got any tips for using the buffing wheel to resotre a shine to the bottle? All I get are bits of cloth flying everywhere and no shine.

Re: Jayne's Blue Sun tequila bottle

go to your local auto parts store and pick up some glass polish.
