JAWS: Quint from the ground up (Shoes, Pants, Shirt, Jacket, Hat)

Well, the interesting twist is that while Quint wears an army jacket, he did not serve in the army - he was navy (hence his experience on the USS Indianapolis). There is no logic to him having an M51 army jacket, other than he bought it for himself as army surplus. The stencil is not military issue either, so he must have gone and made that for himself too (which is a rather oddball thing to do!) But, I guess it all adds to the complex and quirky personality that makes his character!
I completely missed this, sorry for such a late reply but Kypropguy brought this up in another way, pointing out the year the jacket would have become available is after our assumed retirement date from the military. For me, it was "back then" and so I hadn't noticed the discrepancy but the point is completely valid. First, it is a different branch, as you pointed out, but the dates just don't align with the sinking nor the end of the war (not my points but verified after talking with Kypropguy ). I tried to find if these points had been hashed out elsewhere but found nothing. I think that BossThreads identification is spot on and confirmed in numerous ways but would love to have the conversation about the possible origin story to the jacket, name tape and similar. I have emailed the query to thedailyjaws but with it being jaws50, I don't think my request will surface before Chrissy does.

Oh and having dove a bit deeper into my stuff in search of jacket pictures.... I found this pic that I shopped as Quint on vacation.

I recently had a fully custom quint hat made, here’s the photo it was based on compared to mine.

This one is by stock bridge sewing, I found what I believe to be the original fabric for the hat, it’s from the 70s sanforized and in a heavy weight twill 12oz, which results in the same folding that his has. His hat being washable I also got a similar bill, it’s made out of a flexible and washable plastic. The bill was actually the hardest to find as locating a plastic that was similar to the originals proved to be difficult, but I found one and sent it to her to use. I worked with stock bridge sewing to fully recreate the hat using the fabric. I gave the hat a wash and it didn’t shrink at all either. She has a lot of fabric left over if anyone want her to make you one. The brim is also 3 inches rather than the 2.5 that’s normally used, along with having the crown made taller. I believe it to be more accurate to the prop used. If you have any questions I’m happy to answer them!
