I used this basic shape on mine, the one with the separate sleeves. (This is not my pic, but came from Krayt clan I think.)

edit:
i remember now the upper width was determined by where the shoulder sleeve seam needed to be and the width at the bottom was just the full width of my fabric. For sleeves i just left them long and trimmed them down atfer they got sewn on. Easiest is to use a long section of fabric and fold it over. The fold becomes the top with the neck opening.
