It is resin. Solid resin. It's really sturdy. The paintjob looks a hundred times better in person. I followed these tutorials:
Woodgrain:

Metalize:

You have to get the exact paints or it doesn't come out right. This is the cheapest place I've found for the Mohawk paints:
http://www.cdmcabinethardware.com

The gun itself is $60 (which includes shipping), the Mohawk paints are $24.20 (which includes shipping), the black paint was $3.47, silver metallic $3.47, Krylon Matte Finish to take the "shiny" off $3.47, (all from Wal*Mart), and the ivory/off-white paint for the woodgraining was a Behr sample for $2.94 from the Home Depot. The power pack and hose was around $50 and the holster was $115. It's for my 5 year old son who has ADHD. Sturdy or not, during the Adventurecon troop its getting superglued to his hands. LOL!

That's a great wood painting tutorial, I'll have to use that for my AK project..

You could also make the tone colors by mixing the cherry or brown into a clear base coat. That's how I make my cheap practice candy paints for airbrushing..

Utterly amazing looking you got the colors spot on!!!!!!!! I collect Enfields and It's great seeing people using a resin casting instead of a historical artifact so I salute you!!

Man your son is lucky, imagine if our dads did this for us when we were kids, that sure beats anything Kenner put out in the 70's! Awesome.
