This is what I started with
And viola!
It is resin. Solid resin. It's really sturdy. The paintjob looks a hundred times better in person. I followed these tutorials:

You have to get the exact paints or it doesn't come out right. This is the cheapest place I've found for the Mohawk paints:

The gun itself is $60 (which includes shipping), the Mohawk paints are $24.20 (which includes shipping), the black paint was $3.47, silver metallic $3.47, Krylon Matte Finish to take the "shiny" off $3.47, (all from Wal*Mart), and the ivory/off-white paint for the woodgraining was a Behr sample for $2.94 from the Home Depot. The power pack and hose was around $50 and the holster was $115. It's for my 5 year old son who has ADHD. Sturdy or not, during the Adventurecon troop its getting superglued to his hands. LOL!
