James Cameron's Deepsea Challenger Submarine Model

Re: James Cameron's Deepsea Challenger Submarine Model?

I've made a 3D model of the sub.

Does anyone know a good/cheap 3D printing service? Shapeways and others are giving me expensive quotes given the model is 10 inches.

Just out of curiosity, did you every try printing this? Perhaps a printed master, and resin castings of that?

Stumbled across this tonight-

Man, what are the odds. The one carrying the Challenger at that. I hope the damage doesn't compromise the integrity of the hull at some undetectable section.

I still want to tackle this project oine day.

In the meantime here's the ship's main builder, Ron Allum, with his personal model of the ship-

I've finally come back to this thread, can't believe it's been 10 years! I'm interested in starting up this model project again. Have to confess I got the 4K disc of "The Abyss" and that got me back into thinking about this project. So what happened...10 years ago it was too cost prohibitive to 3D print the model I had made, so I ended up abandoning the project. Funny thing though, I went through a period shortly after where I did have money to do this project but I was distracted by other things of course. Now I've come back around again but don't have the funds (irony), but it is cheaper now to print the model. Also doing it now might look better given the improvements in materials/resolution of printing these days. So started saving up, hope to finish this year for real. Just curious if anyone else on here was able to do theirs?

I created an account just to get back to this thread I stumbled upon in Google. I built both of the James Cameron Deep Sea Challenger models and a pair of Trieste models. I can dig up pics off an old photo hard drive for proof. I can't remember if an NDA was involved so I won't mention the production company I worked for back then. I'll see about hunting pics this coming weekend and get back to this post.

My 6yo kid is like me and is all Deep into the titanic and it lead to me hunting online for my old handiwork. The model hulls were FDM spool printed. The smaller bits were a mix of acrylic 3d print and laser cut parts. I vacuum formed the clear dome at the top. Rubber bead string was painted yellow and used as the battery cables. This was 2013 or 2014...

And I do mean I built the actual models for James Cameron. The one seen on Jimmy Fallon show.
Welcome to the RPF...and yes, eager to see photos of your model; I'm sure it'll renew interest to build that sub.:cool:(y)(y):love:

Hell yesssss! I love when a thread like this pays off!

Thank you for posting!

Please share any cool photos or info you can. I've been strangely obsessed with this model since the expedition and can't wait to hear and see anything relating to this model or the project as a whole!

It must have been crazy seeing Cameron cart that model all over television for a couple weeks. Model makers don't usually get that kind of audience and attention.
