Great job on the costume, Indy! :thumbsup Quite a marathon to get this together in just 10 weeks.
Only suggestion I have is just use a wee bit more eyeliner to darken up around your eyes
a little more, maybe a touch of bronzer, then--You'll look just like him!! : )

Re: Jack Sparrow Outfit by Feb 18th... !!!

Yeah, I decided pretty early on that I was going to be subtle, but realistic with my make-up. I've seen too many Sparrows that had too much eyeliner and way too brown. But yeah, I could have used a touch more.

Re: Jack Sparrow Outfit by Feb 18th... !!!

All the facial hair is real except for the braid/plait extensions.

Re: Jack Sparrow Outfit by Feb 18th... !!!

Great project that was, 'specially because of the deadline you set, and you pulled through :thumbsup

Re: Jack Sparrow Outfit by Feb 18th... !!!

Jack's scalp is now proudly on display among some other noble heads:

After seeing my photos, I decided the boots still looked way too clean, so I decided to go crazy with pecard leather dressing on one of the boots:

Much better, in my opinion... now for the left boot.

Lastly, here is an example of hy I didn't want to do any permanent distressing to my frock and waistcoat. Matched with my Holmes shirt and ascot, you've got an excellent 18th Century gentleman's outfit:

Glad it arrived safely and happy it gets a good review from someone who knows
his stuff--in props and in metals!! I'm no expert, but I didn't think it was quite the
POS some were trying to say it was.

Now everyone is happy! ;)
Yep, yep, yep!!!

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE!

Looks great!
I have a cheap costume tricorn that is too small for my Ms. Mazie wig and want to upgrade to a leather one... I know there are a lot of SA out there and a lot of others that definitely aren't. Where did your's come from? It looks great. (or did I miss that?)

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE!

Thanks! My hat came from Captain Venno (from the Keep To The Code forum). I love it!

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE!

Well... I finally started working on an updated version of my baldric. When sorting out my original costume, I got some of the embossed vinyl and a spare buckle, but ran out of time so I ended up using the plain leather baldric you see above.

But, like all of us, I can't leave well enough alone, so here's my build for a more accurate baldric:

First, I start with the long strip of embossed vinyl and two pieces of genuine leather (thin enough to sew easily and fold, but thick enough to give some body to the vinyl, which is really thin):

002.jpg

Facing the vinyl and leather together, I sew a strip along one edge:

003.jpg

Repeating the process on the other side results in this:

004.jpg

After folding the leather around each side and gluing it down (and left to dry under a weight):

This shot shows the cross section well so you can see how the french binding works:

A few holes for the buckle and voila! One belt done:

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE!

Now, the buckle end of the baldric is the easiest part of this (all straight lines, plain cut edges). The longer belt is the same process except it has a finished, curved tip. So, for this, instead two straight pieces of leather, I cut a single, long "U" shaped piece that was sewn all at once:

013.jpg

I miscalculated the correct shape of this piece (the inside of the "U" should be the same size and shape as the tip of the vinyl). Because of this, I had to trim some of the inside of one side of the "U" to get it to fit correctly. This resulted in one side of the leather being narrower than the other. No big deal, since these are folded and glued one on top of the other. It just meant the belt will have a little less weight/body than I wanted.

014.jpg

The tricky part with doing the tip is that you've got to cut a bunch of piece out of the leather so the french braiding can wrap around properly:

016.jpg

I didn't get a shot of the finished tip by itself, but you can see this below in the finished product shots.

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE!

For the "frog" (the part that actually holds the scabbard), I used my leather baldric as a pattern, cut the vinyl to match, then traced it onto the leather to get the french binding part:

017.jpg

The outside was stitched in much the same way as the belt with the tip:

018.jpg

The inside part was a bit more tricky as I wanted to do it as a one piece, so there would be no seam at the inner point.

001.jpg

Again, I had to cut a bunch of triangle out of the leather to get the french roll to work properly. Once it had all been folded over and glued down:

003-1.jpg

I added another piece of leather to the back to give it extra body and to give it a more finished appearance:

002-1.jpg

After punching a few holes and adding the hardware, I've got a new baldric!
