I know this is WAY out in left field BUT would the Board care to comment on the Vietnam tribal dress shirt that was worn by Jack Black in "tropic Thunder" ..... I think it would be terribly amusing and interesting to be able to replicate the piece. I have been trying to do a bit of research on the piece but cannot find exactly what I am after.

Holy crap! Yes!
(Not very helpful, I realize, but I'll keep a researching eye out for you)

Not my cup of tea, but I think it's some kind of persian style rug?

Persian? No.

It looks like it belongs to one of the smaller South East Asian Ethnic groups, it bears a certain resemblance to Hmong dress, for example. But I am certainly not an expert on South East Asian Ethnic groups....

Well, I had just finished watching Prince Of Persia, so I was in that frame of mind, but I have to agree with you jlee.

Yes, I have pretty much narrowed the piece to a Hill Tribe in or near Vietnam (like the Hmong people)...Golden Triangle, perhaps Laos. It is very similar to a Yao Coat ('luy dao') but narrowing the exact piece and even having the piece made is becoming difficult. The black and red look with the highlights are a key and I am continuing to see what I can come up with help of google.....

Hey guys... You might want to look into the traditional dress of the Montagnard people. They are a indigenous tribe in Vietnam. They were recruited by the US special forces during the war. Most hated the commies and fought with us.

If you look at this little black and white pic it shows a Montagnard wearing a similar shirt...

Here is a full color shot of a shirt...

I think they were worn typically with a loin cloth of similar material.

Hope this helps.

Well after speaking with Vietnam era military collectors, the piece has been confirmed as a: Montanyard Ceremonial Shirt with correct loin cloth. They are mostly seen with the US Army Special Forces that worked as advisors to/with the Hill Tribes in an effort to fight against the VietCong. Now, I need to get a repro made for moi' ...all 6' + of me! Cheers.

Post pictures when you get it together!
I hope you can get the rest of the group too :D
