I think the outer ball shape with the finger-like projections might be a cork mold. They were used to trim the cork cores of vintage style sports balls to size.

I don't know how it was made and have never seen it replicated.

What a good idea, it just goes to show that we haven't recreated the whole SW universe yet after all.

Watching that scene, it behaves like someone is standing behind the door and waving the pole around to create the movement. The 'lens' over the 'eye' seems to spring up, too.

Hard to say for sure, but from the 2nd picture, it looks like there is bubble wrap in the clear eye sphere. bottom side down. Yes/No ?

It definately is a bubble wrap. I watched it over and over closely and even when watched via a home cinema projector it can be seen clearly.

Why not?

They applied it to the pilot harness in ESB too.

Bubble wrap with an orange (or yellow?) light behind it - I guess that would make sense. It would achieve that random light effect seen onscreen, as the light shines through the gaps in the bubble wrap.

In an interview released around the time of the Special Editions, Mark said something to the effect of "they made it all from scotch tape and Popsicle sticks." Its incredible to see what they pulled off on these films with such ordinary materials sometimes. I had also heard that they used bubble wrap for Zuckuss' eyes.

me too, I really like things like this , Not sure if we could find who originally created it or get even better images from a blue ray or something. The neck part could be close , but the eye would need to be spot on IMO.
