is it "compulsive hoarding", or just visionary thinking?

hello my fellow people,
I got a new desk because my old one was too big, and when I started emptying my desk, I found lots and lots of stuff I didn't even know anymore I had it.

And when I saw the amount of stuff, a question arose: am I the only one who keeps stuff because there could be the possibility of turning it into something new, or using it when building something, even if you have absolutely no idea what it could be used for? Or just keeping it because "you can always use that for something"?

I'd like to know if there other people out there, and if so, I'd love to see what you are hoarding

Pics plz :)
And aye - I still have sprues and kit parts from the Zoids and original Space Marine kits ( Womble marines! ) I built as a child!

pics will follow tomorrow, if demanded. I'm not at home right now, but I wanted to start this thread before I forget it again :lol

and yeah, this is a start, but I meant stuff other people would regard as trash such as broken lamps or scrap metal, and you just keep it because it has such a nice form :lol

I'm always picking up things that look cool or I think I may use eventually. Probably not a good thing since I left behind a few dozen unbuilt model kits at my father's house when I moved out, and he's moved since. He's renting it out now, but I'm sure he or the tenants pitched everything I left behind. The shame is, I had a lot of "parts" from other kits I could now use for an AMT/Ertl Falcon conversion. Oh well.

Additionally, I have a bunch of audio and video gear sitting around that I should get rid of. Probably enough for at lest three more complete systems. While they work and perform well enough, they have virtually no resale value.

The moral? Don't collect anything you don't have definite plans to use, or at least not without an eye toward resale if you don't.

I pick up random stuff too if I think it looks cool or could be used in a project.
Although I've tried putting on the brakes the last few years, my wife says I've got enough junk already.

I'd think most folk would class sprues as trash :)

But I also have old modems, motherboards, broken watches, torches, clocks...
All in storage now, since I moved house, but the main thing is I KEPT it :)

All compulsive hoarders feel the same way, that their stuff "might" be valuable some day. That is why they keep it. It is pretty hard to let go of something with that frame of mind. That frame of mind also locks your future into a cylcle of burden to be the caretaker of your stuff.

I have been getting rid of stuff over the years, and it sets me free each time I throw something out. I have come to realize that there is ver littel that I can't get if I want it. The internet has made it possible to get anything delivered to my door if I want it.

I still have a way to go. I still have useless stuff sitting around, filing up drawers.

I tend to do this then later on i clean and throw it out only to replace it. Our attic is suffering from this same issue as my dad is a packrat just like my grandma was. We've got parts to stuff in the garage and barn that i doubt is even worth keeping due to age and rust.

I think it really depends on what the items are and any "feelings" attached to them.
If you're keeping greeblies, bits and bobs, etc. for possible future projects, I don't think that's hoarding. Put them all in a "greebly" box on a sheld in the garage or something.

If it's things like water bottles or magazines that you have emotional ties to because your mom gave it to you or because you might reuse it, that's a sign of a hoarder.

Visionary or not, if you hold a thing for years, you won't use it, the day you throw it to the rubbish, it was the most vital piece of your new project and you won't find one anymore...

All PropCollectors have the same Problems.

1. Don´t throw anything away at anytime, everything could be useful.
2. We need more tools, everytime.
3. We need more money, much more.
4. We need more room, even more than money.
5. We need a lot of time for little step´s forward.
6. Normal People think we are a little bit crazy.
7. It´s hard to find a partner that support´s our hobby.
8. We all hate recasters of our work.

But we all have the best hobby on this planet.

Don't listen to them! You definitely have a problem!! The best cure would be to quickly package it all up and send it to me... :ninja

Yeah that's exactly how it is. Last thing I threw away I ended up needing a week later. I have a garage full of old computer parts, cabling, car audio gear and a ton of misc things.

I think the difference between us and hoarders are that they keep TRASH. Then the difference between us and everyone else is the definition of "trash." :lol

I have a small man cave with a closet. The rules from the wife are:
* I can do whatever I want with it
* It can't smell
* It can't attract bugs

So I have LOTS of stuff in it.

I keep grabbing stuff from the recycling centers that is literally junk. But I get it for use with my R3 dome (see-through R2 style droid) and a few other droids. After the R3 dome is done, a lot of what i grabbed will be going back to the recycling center.

It's not hoarding if it's a designated spot for junk.. right? :angel :confused

Yes, I have always struggled with this as well. Harvesting electronics from all sorts of places, along with materials like plexiglass sheets, metal scraps, springs, etc. However, what has become increasingly clear is that it is WAY more hassle to try and build a project around a salvaged part than it is to have a vision for a project, and select materials accordingly. I've wasted a lot of time trying to make something work around a salvaged part in the hopes of saving a relatively small amount of money.

I try now to only save stuff that is actually somewhat expensive, like motors and such.

I thought I was the only one, I save everything, My wife has even learnt to check with me before she throws anything away. LOL.

Sadly I do this as well... I even keep the scrap cuttings of Sintra and so on. Even worse, in my line of work as a watchmaker keeping these stray parts can be a god send. Hvaing a vintage stem to an old watch that has been out of production for years and years can be the difference between a repaired watch and one that I have to give back unrepaired.

What I have had issues with is buying multipal items incase I need/want to make another item/prop. I hate it when I want to build somehting and I can no longer get the item I used in the project.

I always find things with no use at the moment so i save em, somebody always throws it away... 4 days later they ask for it and i jus say "You threw it out not me" haha
