Is Hollywood the Next Detroit?

I am recently hearing a lot about the potential loss of the entertainment industry in Hollywood, with comparisons being made to the loss of the auto industry in Detroit…

Not too much seems to be shot there, anymore. When I visited the iconic Paramount lot, not a lot seemed to be filming there.

I also heard that Disney is pulling out of the Fox lot:

Setting aside the ability that studios have to farm away pre and postproduction work to overseas... just focusing on shooting, California's business climate is nowhere near as pleasant as its actual climate, especially LA county and it's not just for film production. Too many taxes and regulations/permit requirements. Simple as that. All of us here that own a business deal with it.

It's one thing for smaller companies to film in Canada or New Zealand, but there's no reason that a studio should have to leave Hollywood to go to Georgia or North Carolina to save money.

For decades I would say it's been bleeding out due to high costs and regulations, how many major productions went to other states and countries? As far away as Romania even, that was always interesting to me. Hey if it's a Dracula movie it makes sense. LOL

When James Rolfe made his little Angry Video Game Nerd movie... he joked if you want to shoot a tree you better pay for a permit from the effin' squirrel!

St. Louis City, County, and the state of Missouri recently signed a deal with Hollywood offering millions of dollars in tax incentives. A 32 acre movie/music studio is being built a few miles from my home.

I think that soundstage productions are still being shot in Hollywood, but location shoots have definitely moved out of CA altogether.

By the time Star Trek turns 100, there will be no actors sets or cameras.

“Computer, do a Star Trek novel but use TOS era type images.”

Spooky

Well, if this is meant to be a reminder of films that were made outside of Hollywood, especially Doc Hollywood, which was filmed in Florida in the 1990s when Hollywood tried to make Central Florida a second hub of filmmaking, then maybe you're on the right topic.
I visit Micanopy once or twice a year. Lovely little town.

Clint Eastwood's early 'spaghetti westerns' were called that because they filmed in rural Italy & Spain. (They did that, while the real western USA was still pretty sparsely populated. The military used to do atomic bomb tests within sight of Las Vegas.)

Old Star Wars & Indy, Richard Donner's Superman, the early Alien movies, Tim Burton's Batman . . . all shot in England. The soundstage facilities were cheaper than Cali.

Australia/NZ was the new hotness around 2000, between the SW prequels and LOTR.

New Mexico & Louisiana were big spots in 2010, and they still are. The story of 'Logan' took place everywhere from Mexico to Canada but it was all shot in NM.

Hollywood has always been straying away from Cali to save a buck. It's not new.

NZ still is tbf. Minecraft and the Avatar sequels shot here, Ghost in the Shell a few years back. Just not as much hype these days since the big LotR days and probably more smallish productions than big Hollywood productions.
