Ironman MKII - Cardboard edition

Finally after almost 2 years of trolling, I'll post my IM...why not right? ANOTHER IronMan. :behave Back in 2012, at the time I've never talcked such a project of this magnitude. However, Halloween 2011, my wife and I made 8 "human"-sized Lego costumes for me and my co-workers made from "scratch" with our own design out of cardboard and foam.

(Don't bother clicking those arrows to advance the pictures, could only find a photo on the ol' FB)

We came in first place! I think we put in about 60+ hours, planning, prep, all that jazz, so for 2012, I thought to myself, instead of putting 60+ into 8, 5,3, or 2 costumes, I'd put all that into one!

Love Ironman, wanted the MKII or MKIII. Either are awesome. It still thrills me in IM1 when he takes the MKII for the first flight. So I decided on the MKII out of cardboard (not foam), cardboard is free and VERY available. I ssed Dancin_Fool's Iron Man MkII/MkIII - unfold for foam by JFcustom and Stealth's hand files.

One thing I wanted to do with my suit is LEAVE it as cardboard. I wanted people to see what I could do with cardboard...and basically what they couldn't do with it. Some people give me flak for it, most people stood in awe, but it was a conscience decision from the get go. I had also never worked with Bondo, which i didn't have time to tackle; I think I started IM on Sept 1st and finished about 3 days before all the parties. Anyway, leaving it as straight cardboard had it's disadvantages too, it was very delicate, I'd wear it, then have to repair it before wearing it again, not everywhere, but enough. I was going to bondo it later, but I had no where to store it...eventually GAVE IT TO SOME FRIENDS KIDS!!! I still regret that decision, but i still don't have anywhere to put it. :(

I once read on the RPF, that if your mask isn't symmetrical, then no one will care about the rest of the costume. So that's where I started.

(I won't bore you with TONS of in progress photos as we have all seen all the IronMenses in all their glory.)

brow and velcro added

Not terribly bad. The next step was the arms. The hand is in red foamies here because right before I switched to a full blown IM suit, I was going to do just the arm and arc reactor from IM1 where he is wearing the fully painted arm and "absentmindedly" screwdriver-ing the forearm. Anyway, the joints in the arms and legs are both teddy bear parts.

Rear view with shoulder armour

Then the chest and back and legs.

The arc reactor hole was funny. The Dancin_Fool files have a ring of "material" for the depth of the hole. I didn't like the my results, I couldn't keep it symmetrical. I ended up using a medium size Starbucks paper coffee cup! (not pictured)

At some point, I decided to "power" the suit with lights. Very fun project, never did any electrical (hobby or DIY) ever, so this was really fun.

Here's the arc reactor...it's just printed.

Fast-forward...first suit up.

Wore it to 4th Street Live Halloween Costume Contest here in Louisville, KY. Came in 3rd in my category. Lost to the Invisible Man (pictured below)...which was a SWEEEET costume. You'd have to see it. That night was crazy!!! Couldn't walk 5 feet without someone wanting to have their photo with me.

Wore it to work on Halloween day!

If you have any question, let me know. I have tons more photos.

This young lass won "Most Sexiest" or whatever... and boy did she deserve it. It wasn't "Halloween Trashy" as A LOT of women fall into on Halloween.
