Ironborn Theon Greyjoy outfit WIP

Well here goes my first costume work in progress. This is an Ironborn outfit I've been banging out. Presently, I haven't put correct lacing in - I'm waiting or my spool of leather lacing in the mail. Beyond that, I haven't put in all the studding or finished off the sleeve epaulets, or finished the lower placards. Need some boots still and other leather belt bits. Then the most dreaded portion...taking all of my hours of patterning, cutting, ironing, and sewing and then "mess it up". Distressing the costume will be psychologically damaging to me, but I know it needs to be done.

So, I'm a bit nervous with so many awesome type folks..but nevertheless here it is!

Would definitely like to see the armour bits you make. I purchased eva foam to do the armour but the costuming took so much that i have let it rest.

I've been at this for a couple of weeks and finding pep files for a basic breastplate is pretty much impossible. The closest thing I have found is using the storm trooper chest plate and just making some alterations. What I will most likely end up doing is buying a gothic breastplate and just using masking tape or something as filler with the leather over top of it. Its kind of frustrating really. I've made the Greyjoy sigil out of clay and its drying now. Its hard to find the right one to use, this one is online but it is the wrong one (http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/ProductImageCompressAll300/A042_1_20130130109459637.jpg) this is the costume one you can see it on his scabbard belt (http://imageshack.us/a/img826/6986/greyjoyarmor.jpg) you can see it on his sword belt. I will post pictures when I have most of it done.

I have a question about the iron islander robe, Is it all one piece or two? Looks like a large scarf and a half robe idk.

The robe was actually quite easy. I took an old button up shirt and just continued down the bottom line with more fabric to make a pattern.

Then i added a square flap to the shoulder blades. Now the piece you are wondering about is the long lapels. They are attached and run the whole length. When up, it is a hood, when down it is scrunched up around the neck, rather than folded. Occasionally i wonder if the lower 12 inches of lapel is attached, but in the end i did the whole line.

I then did a rough whip stitch the entire length, then repeat going the other direction. That took a while.

There is another thing that took me a while to understand, but eventually i caught it. The belt actually passes through two holes on the hip line of the coat. So the belt pulls the coat against your back, but leaves the front open....like a BOSS!

There are apparently different lengths of coat as well. Balon's coat has a diagonal line open in the front, making his shorter than yara's. i made my long, and heavy out of canvas. I know i will be burning hot at conventions, but i prefer clothes that actually work as intended.

A couple of updates, I have since received my breastplate/back-plate and am working on the fitting the leather to it which is proving to be an interesting task. I put a base coat of grey paint on the armor to dull it a bit before I put on my darker charcoal/blue tinge coat which I will post later. I have also finish painting the Greyjoy brooch that I made out of clay, which I hardened and painted. The first image is a generic image of the armor I bought online because in my haste I didn't take any pictures before I painted it.

progress.JPGAlright quick update, I've carved out the sigil on the leather and have almost completed the pauldrons which you can kind of see on the sides, they are pretty rough right now but are too be painted and I will try to get them looking decent enough. I also need to add the straps at the top of the armor which I have and are in the process of being completed. I should be done with it this week at least that's what I'm hoping. Rue man I wish I had your talent with the other materials your doublet is spot on.

Thanks Adam, i spent a hella long time making it. And i really appreciate your compliment. I just hope others will recognize it at spernova on november.

Your armor is looking good...but the image is a bit distorted. What are the pauldrons made out of?

The top part is poster board that I ran through the resin/fiberglass/bondo process. There were no helpful templates so I just ended up looking at a picture of the armor theon is wearing and just measured it out and shaped it on the poster board and cut it out. the bottom of the pauldrons are foam knee pads I got at home depot which are not my favorite bits. They did not take to plasticizing too well when I painted them they became soft again. When doing the top portion though with the pepakura process I used a blow dryer to heat them up and bend them which makes them a million times more malleable. If you do this process do not try to bend it without it being heated up, when I first finished them they turned a little straight and wouldn't bend with the foam and I tried to bend it and it cracked so yeah heat it up first!

Looking good, can't wait for the shoulder straps to complete the look. How about the colour? I see that you are going with a flat black (i think). From the screen pics i got, i get a sense of a blue/grey.

I did my doublet in more of a grey/blue, even though a lot of times i see it as black/grey. I think the lighting in the greyjoy scenes really changes the colours.
