Iron Man mk42 Detail Discussion

Hey ya'll! I've been debating with myself for the past few days regarding the small detail on the mk42 helmet that really bugs the hell outta me. Whether to attach it to the faceplate or not, or to leave it attached to the cheek. I have a mk42 helmet care of biggeek/finhead that i thinned out the insides using all sorts of things and tools, then reinforced with milled fiberglass matting. Now what piques my interest is the detail. Not so sure which one to follow anymore! :facepalm

Here are some pics from the movie I managed to get hold of thanks to a friend and google.

Also thinking, that if I attach the silver detail to the faceplate, it might interfere/hinder with the helmet motorization I plan to do with it.

Opinions anyone?

Yes I noticed that too. Guess it depends on preference.

What I think would be really interesting to do with this, but perhaps tricky, is to have the hinges for the Faceplate attach to the the 'Silver Wings' (Do we have an unofficial name for these?) Have have a detachable/magnet mount on them for the Faceplate, so that when the Faceplate is in the raised position the 'Wings' are up there with it, but when the Faceplate is detached they can be in their correct lowered position.

It'd be film accurate, and really cool!

Yes I do believe that is how it works. Silver thingy attached to the faceplate when open, and silver thingy attached to the cheek when faceplace is detached. Only problem is, how to make it work like that. :(

i was thinking you could incorporate the silver thingy into part of the hinge design and attach the faceplate w/ magnets to the hinge.

I vote for Mig407's idea, that's how I would design it at least. I also vote for not calling them 'silver thingies' anymore lol

what should we call 'em then? Silver linings?

I don't have any idea at the moment how to make it work like the one in the movie. I was thinking of locks or slots for the faceplate to the hinge, but that's just me. Any thoughts?

I've been debating this for my own mark 42 build. I've conned them simply 'cheek guards.' I think what would be best is to strategically place some rare earth magnets to attach it to both parts of the helmet. Anyone that has used RE magnets (in my case Neodymium ones) knows that they are extremely strong, but can be easily slid apart. Work out the angle that your hinges will lift the visor, and make sure the magnets are perpendicular, so they don't have a chance to slide apart. then make sure it is possible to remove the faceplate parallel to the magnets direction. If you can get the angles right, I think that this could be a very reliable method. :)
