[Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - DONE!

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Could i buy those CAD files?

Shoot me your email and I'll gladly share them--no need to pay :thumbsup

Man that's a beautiful project.

Thanks Wes! I'm right in the middle of building another for another member, and I'll be doing all the finish work on this original project (prepping/painting the armor, mounting everything together for display)

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

You know, I've never seen anyone make the CHEST.

Any plans for that?

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Nope, no plans. However, the first version I did I based on this video. He made a pretty decent attempt on the chest piece.

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Oh hey that totally is a fan grille, haha. Nice work.

What are those small thin pistons, are they some sort of found item or were they scratch built?

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

The piston are scratch built using two diameters of aluminum tube and ring terminal connectors

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Well, the packages from Brad arrived today all safe and sound. Once I finish up the current flight stabilizer and get that shipped off, I can begin surface prep on the armor pieces to get them ready for paint.

I can't stress enough how awesome and clean these pieces are from Clinton :thumbsup

Brad also included an electronics package from Ryan (aka TheRealStark) which has LED boards for the eyes and unibeam, as well as a speaker that plays a "charge up" sound as the unit is powering up. I couldn't resist firing it up and seeing how the unibeam will look!

Definitely like the light dispersement of the last pic, so I'll most likely build an enclosure to hold the unibeam plate above the circuit board rather than right on top of it. Can't wait to get this going! :D

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Seems like a small piece of clear plexi or maybe some acrylic tubing would hold it up off the circuit board easy enough.

Cannot wait to see the rest of the build, you gonna add in the bullet holes as well?

Chris

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

We're just going to do some light weathering and black wash, nothing too extreme :thumbsup

Just a quick update, I've gotten most of the parts trimmed up and ready for sanding. Yesterday I spent the afternoon doing some test fitting of the helmet and neck seal to figure out just how I'll have it attach, since the display will be hanging and not on a mannequin. I think I have a couple of ideas that I'll play around with, but any suggestions are welcome!

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Mocked up a quick teaser to show how this might look in the end... :cool

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Couple more shots... Finished test fitting both arms. Now they're ready for some straps to attach to the shoulder bells, and then wet sanding and paint!

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Quick update here!

The first build I used a PC fan cover for the honeycomb mesh on the stabilizer, and it worked exactly the way I wanted it to. However, on the second build I couldn't quite get the mesh to fit in the way I did the first time around. Since that was the biggest piece I could find with that particular size honeycomb, I had a 3D model drawn up so that I could print it at Shapeways, then mold and cast it to make the proper size piece of mesh.

Here is the printed piece:

The mold:

And the first cast:

IMG_20130512_191127_zpsa5db9f0e.jpg

This was a pretty difficult piece to cast since the mold had a lot of small nooks and crannies, literally. Also, the resin I use has a quick kick of only about 90 seconds before it starts to set up, so there isn't a lot of time to pour and slosh it around for even coverage. I poured the first cast a bit heavy so that I could be sure to get the resin into every part of the mold, and then took it to the belt sander to lower the profile. Once I had a good thickness, I used a heat gun to soften the plastic and shaped it to the proper shape of the stabilizer:

IMG_20130512_191414_zps74eea7d1.jpg

Perfect fit! Now I just need to do a little fine sanding and prime and paint it. Then I can finally move on to finishing this second gauntlet and get it shipped off to its new home :)

On the armor front, I've actually gotten quite a bit done. The helmet has been trimmed and fitted with magnets, the torso has been completely cleaned up and is ready for paint. I have also drilled the holes into the shoulder areas of the torso to accept the eye bolts for hanging. The biggest thing I have left to do is figure out how to make the helmet stable on the neckseal once it is all assembled. I have put a couple of magnets into the neckseal where the back of the helmet meets it for alignment purposes, but they aren't nearly strong enough to hold the helmet in place. If I can find a box big enough for shipping, I may permanently attach the main helmet to the neckseal (already in place on the torso) so that it definitely won't go anywhere... Any ideas?

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

As long as the helmet is in the right position on the neck seal I don't see a problem with permanently attaching it.

I guess it would be nice to be able to slightly change it's position as needed for display.

I defer to the guys who actually have experience with this kinda thing! :D

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Couple small finishing touches left and this one is done too!

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Alright, back to the main build here. I've put in some good time on the armor this past week, mainly getting the pieces prepped for paint. Everything is in primer except the gold bits, and I had just enough red to finish up the chest/back, shoulder bells, and forearm gauntlet. The rest of the red paint should be here in a couple days, and I'll be able to finish the painting soon!

Today I finished up the unibeam housing. It consists of a PVC connector I cut down to size, some sanding and dremeling, and then gave the inside a nice silver paint job to help reflect and diffuse the light. The electronics board is attached to the back, the unibeam nests on top, and the clear acrylic plate and ring sit on top of that, forming a fully enclosed unit.

Here it is being test-fit into the chest:

IMG_20130520_124709_zps38bcd1e7.jpg

And here is a quick video showing the awesome power-up and flicker effect TheRealStark custom made for the project!

The flicker you see coming from inside the chest is the eye circuit that turns on once the unibeam is "powered up". I'll be working on the eye housing next!

Ooooh baby. That video is such a tease!

I feel like a kid on Christmas morning!

Great build! Awesome work!!

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

One more quick update before bed...

Got the eye details in place, along with the lense. Also built the housings for each eye circuit using styrene, then painted the inside bright silver and the outside black. I placed two sets of magnets on each eye box so they can easily be removed from the faceplate if necessary.

The eye detail:

IMG_20130521_000631_zpsb6fba440.jpg

And a quick video showing it all in place:

Now that I know everything works as it should, I'll seal the eye boxes up so there won't be any light bleed inside the helmet :thumbsup

We're finally getting close to the end!

Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!

Hey. I'm new here and looking to build something quite similar. Do you think you could send me a link to the files used for this? Thanks!

EDIT : Im just looking for the template used on the arm mount(First few posts). Just the metal sheets that go into it, if that makes sense.
