Re: [Iron Man] Mk. II Flight Stabilizer Gauntlet v2 - COMPLETE!
Quick update here!
The first build I used a PC fan cover for the honeycomb mesh on the stabilizer, and it worked exactly the way I wanted it to. However, on the second build I couldn't quite get the mesh to fit in the way I did the first time around. Since that was the biggest piece I could find with that particular size honeycomb, I had a 3D model drawn up so that I could print it at Shapeways, then mold and cast it to make the proper size piece of mesh.
Here is the printed piece:
The mold:
And the first cast:
This was a pretty difficult piece to cast since the mold had a lot of small nooks and crannies, literally. Also, the resin I use has a quick kick of only about 90 seconds before it starts to set up, so there isn't a lot of time to pour and slosh it around for even coverage. I poured the first cast a bit heavy so that I could be sure to get the resin into every part of the mold, and then took it to the belt sander to lower the profile. Once I had a good thickness, I used a heat gun to soften the plastic and shaped it to the proper shape of the stabilizer:
Perfect fit! Now I just need to do a little fine sanding and prime and paint it. Then I can finally move on to finishing this second gauntlet and get it shipped off to its new home
On the armor front, I've actually gotten quite a bit done. The helmet has been trimmed and fitted with magnets, the torso has been completely cleaned up and is ready for paint. I have also drilled the holes into the shoulder areas of the torso to accept the eye bolts for hanging. The biggest thing I have left to do is figure out how to make the helmet stable on the neckseal once it is all assembled. I have put a couple of magnets into the neckseal where the back of the helmet meets it for alignment purposes, but they aren't nearly strong enough to hold the helmet in place. If I can find a box big enough for shipping, I may permanently attach the main helmet to the neckseal (already in place on the torso) so that it definitely won't go anywhere... Any ideas?
