Iron Man Mark V Transforming Briefcase Armour

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share my latest project with other enthusiasts.

Over the past 10 months I’ve designed and built the world’s first Iron Man Mark V Briefcase Armour from the Iron Man 2 movie.

The thing that makes my suit special is that it actually transforms from a briefcase into the full suit of armour, with functional lights and repulsors (the hand blaster) sounds. Everything on this costume has been built from scratch, using only a few reference images from the movie.

If you want to see photos of the build process, visit my photo album here:

And, for a video of me winning “Best in Show” at Toronto’s Comic Con a week ago, visit here: YouTube - Iron Man Mark V Briefcase Armour Debut

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thanks!

Doesn't count, you needed assistance putting it on. :unsure

J/K, very nicely done. Love how it folds down into a handy portable.

Yeah, that was unfortunately required, simply due to the unpredictable weight of the armour - I didn't want to test the strength of the Lego hinges, lol.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! :)

Maybe now you have basic build etc you should start looking into actually making it a working proto-type?

Ha ha ha, great idea. I had actually looked into patenting the design (minus the Iron Man part), but I don't have $30 000 to spare, lol.

The design worked pretty well, but the structural integrity of the Lego was the weakest part of the build.

If I were to build another one, I would definitely use stronger materials. I have a very limited knowledge of armour materials, casting, CNC etc., so I'd have to learn a lot more before I'd take another shot at it.

I'm going to try my hand at a Mark III first, and perhaps another world-first costume within the Marvel Universe - I need to work out the logistics first, and if I can figure that out, I'll post a thread on here with photos/details.

Yeah, bonus points for creativity!!!

Are you planning to refine it a bit more, or are you moving on to new projects already?

Thanks Michael! I think I'm moving on to other projects now. My goal was to demonstrate that it is possible to construct a suit, and I'm hoping it inspires someone with more experience (and resources) to improve on the design and make it more compact, and self-assembling.

Very nice and insperational to mark v armor builders! I've been toying with an assembling mark v helmet.
Hope you come back to this build at some point later and do some refining.

Awesome work! Keep up the awesome builds

Wow that blows my Mark V Suit outta the water!!!
Great Job Bro!!

Thanks Malmey! It was quite a challenge trying to balance the look of the suit, functionality AND ability to compact everything into a briefcase-ish form, all while incorporating working lights and sound, lol. Unfortunately, since I didn't have access to a functioning Arc Reactor with an unlimited energy source, I couldn't power the hundreds of servos necessary to make it move on it's own, and had to settle for a little help from my roommates. ;)

Awesome work on your costume though too! Excellent attention to detail. I'm assuming you used the concept art for the movie by Ryan Meinerding?

Very impressive!

Do you plan on sharing your notes or design with other Mark V builders? (I'm not asking for myself; I'm too wrapped up in the Mark III :lol )

Yep! I actually posted an hour of video footage on my YouTube page, split into 4 parts. Here's the link for Part 1: YouTube - Making of Iron Man Mark V Briefcase Armour - Part 1 of 4

I also photo-documented the entire process, which can be found on my Cosplay profile: Cosplay.com - Iron Man Mark V Briefcase Armour

Thanks for the compliments! My next suit is going to be the Mark III, so I'll probably be referring to your (and everyone else on this incredible site's) work when it comes time to build the armour. :)
