Iron Man Mark V build - WIP

After seeing all the great Iron Man builds online, I had to give it a go. I originally intended on making a Mark IV suit, but as I was planning, I was looking closely at pics of the Mark V, and decided to do both. I figured I could build one, and learn from it, and make the next one even better.

I chose to go with eva foam as a base, as it's cheap and I can afford to make mistakes and simply get more. I intend on coating it in PVA glue and plastic later, but for now I want to get used to building a whole suit from scratch. I've never used pepakura or anything like that, so I'm free handing this build using photos of the suit from the movie, and from the Hot Toys Mark V 1/4 bust and 1/6 figure as reference. I often rewatch the scene in IM2 looking for details not seen before and whatnot.

I draw out the pieces on a4 paper as I see them fitting together (except the gloves, which I got from JoWe's thread), and when satisfied I cut them out and trace them onto eva foam of varying thickness. At this stage I'm using 2mm, 5mm and 10mm foam sheets, and contact cement. The contact cement works really well. I'm a bit hesitant to use a hot glue gun in case it melts any part of the foam.

Starting with the reactor piece, then working around the chest/bust, I used the 5mm and 10mm foam to get the base shape, and then added a layer of 2mm foam, as appropriate, for additional detail. My intent is to use more foam between the exterior layers, almost like hinges, to allow flexibility when it eventually takes shape.

I had to do both forearms twice, on my first attempt I didn't allow for glueing space, and they were too narrow to get past my wrist. The photos here show the forearms only partially completed, I'll add more detail to both ends, add the elbow joint and clean up the wrists.

Also, the reactor here is only temporary, I threw that together to see if I could do it. The next one will be neater :lol

I want to give a huge amount of thanks to sjorsjo91, when I saw his build I knew I could do something like that. After looking at how he was making everything from scratch, I couldn't just watch anymore. Honestly if I didn't see his thread, I would still be figuring out where to start :thumbsup

I'll keep adding photos and updates as I go, I hope you enjoy :cool

Thanks Zabana, good to know someone of your calibre is following my work! I hope you like what you see :lol

I've been working on this every night in some form, either creating paper templates to use on the foam, or gradually glueing the larger pieces together. Most of the pieces I'm making end up with a 2mm foam coating, so that means I'm cutting out each foam template twice - once for the base, once for the coating.

I've almost completed the three panels that connect to the underside of the reactor, on the torso, so I'll have photos of them soon. I've also made the shoulder sections, they will connect the front and back sections together, but I'm reluctant to glue those parts at the moment in case I need to adjust them.

The photos today are the upper sections on the back. The larger pieces aren't glued together yet, but they will be soon. Hopefully you can see which parts they are supposed to be :)

Very nice. I am always impressed with mark V builds. It's such a complex suit. Maybe some day after I'm done with my mark IV and my wife's Rescue armor and my storm trooper, I'll get a wild hair up my but and make my own mark V. :)
Keep up the good work!

Thanks Helagak :)

I've made a little more progress and have some new photos today. The abdominal panels are halfway there, I've got more detail to add but I wanted to see what they looked like when attached to the reactor piece.

The chest and back pieces are glued together now, and currently separate at the collar and around the ribs. I've used tape in the photos to hold them together, but I intend to use buckles, magnets and velcro later. I hope you can see how it's going to work :)

I've also added a photo of the gloves and wrists along with the initial vertebrae pieces. I'll probably do the gloves again, as the palms are a bit messy and it don't look quite right, but for now I'm using these ones as the scale is ok.

None of the vertebrae are attached yet, but once I'm happy with them I'll see how I can make them work.

Thanks for checking out my thread, hope you like what you see so far :lol

good god thats what you call a little progress??!!? fan freaking tastic man :D look forward to seeing more

haha, when I showed the photos to my friends, they did ask if any of the Iron Man suits are bright orange and purple :lol

I will totally be building the whole suit before any sealing and painting happens, so you can look forward to seeing that. It'll likely be a patchwork like you see above, and when I can get it wearable it'll be even funnier!

Another quick update today, the upper chest and back are now glued together and the strapping over the shoulder/collar has some extra detail. The shoulder pieces are also done, they will have more detail added to them later. The photos show the shoulder pieces on the bust, but at the moment they're just sitting there, and not quite in the right place either. I may need to re-do them if they end up being a bit small, but at the moment they seem ok. They took a while so I'm reluctant to do them again :lol

I'll be working on the upper arms and elbows next, and the collar/neck. pretty soon I'll have a bust with arms and gloves ready to try on :cool

Hey all, another quick update today. I've had to re-do the shoulder pieces as they were too small, I was hoping they would be ok but after attempting to confirm their position I could tell they would look tiny compared to the rest of the chest armor. Also, I've connected the left hand side underarm pieces, so you can see roughly how the chest will look when wrapped around my body :)

I've started adding the spine to the suit, however I need to make the rest of the waist/torso before continuing, this will ensure they are the correct size.

I've made four fingers for the right hand, I'll do the thumbs next. All of the hands/fingers came from JoWe's thread - thanks again JoWe :thumbsup

Lastly, the biceps are done. I'm particularly happy with how they turned out. Now I've got to make the elbow joint, and finish the wrists, then I'll be able to tape them to the chest for another photo op.

Thanks to everyone for having a look at my progress!

Super quick update today. I've been making a Mass Effect 3 N7 foam suit this past week, taking a break from this suit. This IM suit takes a lot longer to design and build, but the N7 suit is almost ready for assembly and painting. I'll have a thread up for that one when I have some photos ready :)

The polymorph plastic I ordered via ebay came today, so I put together the reactor I intend to use for this IM suit. I already had the LEDs and other parts ready, so it took me about an hour to put together. A big shout goes out to Stealth for making such a good tutorial video!

Thanks for looking, and I hope whatever you are building is going well :thumbsup
