Iron man Mark III progress FACEPLATE PRIMED 1/4/2011

Hi all, I've always wanted to make an Iron Man suit but don't have access to any machinery or heavy duty materials. When I came across the pepakura technique and Dancin_Fool's awesome files I had to try it. I just wanted to post my progress and get a bit of feedback on what everyone thinks.

I started on the suit a few days ago and so far have finished the helmet, right bicep, upper and lower forearm and the elbow. I picked up some polyester resin today and started on the upper forearm as I thought it would be the easiest part to do again if I screwed it up.

I put one coat on the outside, let it dry and then coated the inside. I'm going to get some fibreglass tomorrow to strengthen the inside but I was just wondering if it looked right so far?

So let me know what you think and any tips on the resin or fibreglass process would be really helpful :)

that looks pretty awesome man!
while dancingfool does make a pretty good helmet. you should really try pepping the Sharkhead helmet. its the most accurate.

i cant wait to see an update!

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

A lot cleaner pep job then me :) Looking good so far!

edward yours is pretty good.
did you ever go back and fix the chin detail?

oh and Magna.
when you get to the point when you want to resin.
Start on a bicep or something that can easily be repepped.

what i have done on both of my iron man helmets is...
Resin the outside of the helmet in thin layers about three times,
then once it has cured and can hold its shape. i usually rondo the inside
(rondo is bondo body filler mixed with fiberglass resin)

The rondo cures pretty quickly and it hardens up nicely.

then you go on to bondo the outside then sand and paint.
but dont over do the bondo lol

hopes that helped!

Thank's guys, good to know I'm on the right track. I started with the resin on the upper forearm and I think it's looking pretty good so far, going to get the fiberglass on today. I'll probably try the rondo method on the left forearm and see which is easier and which I prefer. I'll definitely be making a few other helmet's so I'll start off with Sharkhead's, thanks for the tips they really helped.

Just a quick question about hardening the helmet, mine is a perfect fit, it's perfect when it's on but needs to stretch maybe a cm to slide my ears in. So I was wondering if it will still flex a little or if I should go easy on the fiberglass at the bottom?

Also want to get the chest pep'd today so I'll be posting pics as soon as that's done. Cheers. :)

if i were you i would just use that helmet as practice. it is a beautiful pep tho! haha. but im sure you will have enough room in it if you decide to rondo the inside. but on your next one scale the model just a cm bigger and you should have plenty of room

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

I'm just finishing up hardening the helmet with resin and am probably going to rondo the inside. I live in Australia and can't get the Bondo brand here, so I was wondering if anybody knew if this would be a good alternative:

Thanks :)

Also, I've nearly finished peping the chest so pics will be up soon

Yup that body filler should work just fine, in fact any body filler you can get will work, the easier to sand the better trust me... Sanding is the DEVIL!!!

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

I used that body filler mixed with resin and it worked really well, I did as much as I could before I took the faceplate off and then just finished up the edges. Now that it's all hardened the faceplate doesn't match up like it did before, so does anyone know a good way of altering the faceplate so it fits properly?

Couldn't post pics for some reason :confused but I took some that show where it's not sitting right so I'll put them up ASAP

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

so u rondoed the inside, have u used any of the filler itself on the outside yet to smooth the helmet? you may be able to make the face plate match up with some filler work on the outside of the helmet, but i will need to see pics to assess the situation

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

you could use some body filler to kind of sculpt the outside of the helmet to match the faceplate. or vise versa.
or you could just pep a new faceplate glue it to the old body of the helmet and try again.
Cant wait to see pics!

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

Ok, so I was finally able to get the pics up, sorry about the wait. Hopefully they give you a good idea of how it's sitting.

I really wanted to avoid having to cut the faceplate out after so the way I hardened the helmet was to use tape on the inside to hold the faceplate. Then put two coats of resin on the outside without sealing up the join. Once the helmet could hold it's shape I taped the faceplate on the outside and used rondo on the inside coming as close to the join as I could, then once it was hardened i took the two pieces apart and finished the rondo around the edges.

Because the Dancin_Fool helmet doesn't have a lip on the inside of the faceplate I couldn't rondo very close to the edge without sealing the gap. So I think it warped while rondo on the edges was drying.

I haven't put any filler on the outside yet but I think by the time I've put enough on to line up the faceplate I might end up losing the shape of the helmet. I might just use this as a practice and try the Sharkhead helmet now that I have a better idea of what to expect. Sorry about the long post but I wanted to try and explain everything clearly :)

Cheers :)

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

Hey magna you can fix this easy with filler work, you need to add filler to the outside to smooth out all the ridges in the pep anyhow, just work on small areas at a time

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

It's been a while between updates, Just started a new job so haven't had as much time to work on the suit as I would like. Anyway, here's some pics of the pepped chest piece and the hardened right bicep.

To get the bicep to this point was A LOT of work, which I was kind of expecting after reading some posts on here. But it really has been worth it and I'm hoping the more time I spend at this stage the better it's going to look. I'm just refining the detail on the bicep then I've got some putty and primer filler with a lot of sanding in between then it should be ready for paint. The chest doesn't have any supports yet, I just want to wait until I've got the back piece done so I can line them up right.

Also, could anybody recommend some good paint colours or techniques to make it look metallic and to make it last? And Kagn, if you wouldn't mind, could you tell me what colours you used for that absolutely amazing display helmet you did? Did you finish it with a clear coat or anything?

Let me know what you think, more pics very soon :)

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

the build is coming great! i think most iron man makers use gray primer, silver undercoat, then nissan red. just my 2 cents.:)

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

Hey everyone, I have to apologize for the long wait between updates, I've been working a lot lately so have had nowhere near as much time as I would like to work on this.

After half finishing the sharkbeetle dunghead helmet I realized I had accidentally printed out the small version so gave up on that one. Then I started the sharkhead hd v2.1 but that turned out too small so I started the Samuray easy iron man and scaled it up slightly. I finished pepping yesterday and am waiting for the second coat of resin to dry while I post this. In the first photo you can see the size difference between the two, it's not much but now it fits without crushing my ears lol :)

Also, I've seen a few more Iron Man threads pop up recently and think it's awesome, helps keep me motivated and I can't wait to see how they turn out.

Re: Iron man Mark III progress (pic heavy)

This is really good so far Magna. Cannot wait to see the completely finished product.

Listen to Kagn! He definitely knows what he is talking about.
