Sorry, I like to keep all my loyal fans in the loop! :p

Re: Iron Man Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 15/3/11 - Pg 4)

Awww man I thought your build was one you finished ages ago, I didn't realise you started about the same time I did... your putting me to shame :$

I found a supplier in Redruth of all things like fiberglass and filler so I thought you might like the link...

Fibreglass, Glass Fibre, Gelcoat, GRP, Polyester Epoxy Resin - CFS Fibreglass Supplies

They even do the 2 part foam filler that Ben used on his Halo lids and is the wayI'm going to be going with my MKIII suit, I just need to save up the pennies to make the drive to Redruth worth while... I might even combine it with a visit to a clone trooper in the 501st who loves out that way :D

Sweet.
Cheers Cyber. Yeah, still in progress. I wish it was something I'd done ages ago. But it isn't and I love doing it.
If they deliver then I may get some stuff :D
May get some progress pics up very soon.

Ladies and Gentlelmen, I come baring gifts in the form of UPDATES!
So feel free to discuss. Although, do have to say the front on pic does not give the mask much justice, makes the jaw look wider than it is. When I have finished at the docs tomorrow then it will be sanding central until I am very happy. Then time for some more filler application.

And here is the result of hand sanding. A very dusty Mykii :D

Also, anyone have any good tips on how to fill in the gap between the faceplate and jawline? I'm afraid to do it since I can not get in there very easy unless I dremel off the faceplate. Same goes with the ear pieces.

PS. Got my dad's old dremel working so possibility I will take off the faceplate if I can work out the best lines :p

I know you don't want to hear this but!.... You need a Black & decker Mouse Buddy! It'll make life easier....and if you keep sanding by hand, I'll be dead before I can see it finished Lol. Ha! Ha! I'd lend you mine but you don't live around the corner. That dremel should help some. Keep building!.....

I may get one but I'm finding working by hand is so much more efficient. I can feel the curves etc. Yes, it is time consuming doing it by hand but it is also free. I don't have any money for a mouse sander just yet but definitely will contemplate it when I've got the spare cash.

Man your bucket is starting to take a very nice shape!
Still plenty of work to do, but I love the progress:)

Here is an update.
As you can see I have applied some primer to the helmet so I can see where I really need to sand. This has helped alot as I did this before and it gave me a chance to get one half of the helmet as smooth as you can see.
This was HAND SANDED with no block for a good 5 hours straight. Had to take advantage of the weather.

Still got the other half of the helmet to do. Also do not worry about the huge welts on the front right, I need them there and when I get a working dremel (As the one I was using burnt out :[ ) so I can sand down the area a bit more as it seems to be the best way to get the definition on the face mask. I have also decided to take the facemask off when I can work out a way to have it attached with hinges etc.

Going to try and get a higher grade sandpaper as I have only used 120 so far.

So here we go, some updates!

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

you are doing good, just dont give up on it,
when i was working on my last iron man helmet, i was at this stage, and i hated it lol
oh and i wouldnt even mess with removing the faceplate since you have pretty much bondoed over the seams haha,

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

Yes, I have bondo over the places, but have kept note of where the seams are. Wouldnt be too hard for me redo it if necessary.

In all fairness, I find this stage exciting, but because I'm hand sanding it can take its toll. If the weather is good this weekend it shall be a good days worth of sanding again and hopefully I will have completed the shell and start thinking about higher grades of sandpaper!

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

Mykii ... very nice so far specially for hand sanding ... keep rocking out with your block out ... lol ... the helmet is sweet so far ... how much bondo did you spread over the whole helmet ... how thick is it?

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

Currently about about 3-5mm thick if that. I don't want it too thick but just enough that it can show the details. I'm waiting on some money to get my hands on a dremel so I can get going on the real details. I may go over with a block again after it is completely smooth looking. But so far I have found much more joy from doing it by hand, gives me a sense of enjoyment haha. Also with hand sanding you can concentrate on a small area at a time and get the knocks out. Very time consuming but with patience you can do ANYTHING!

Next step, to make a full working arc reactor. Although, to be honest my next big build will be trying to make a full steel ironman. I have a budget of $100 :p

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

yeah, a dremel will really help you out with getting nice sharp lines on the details after you get the shape down by hand, keep it up mate :)

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

Cheers Magna.
Just in the garden waiting for the filler to dry. Shouldnt take long, it is a baking hot day compared to normal. And I've just done 2 and a half hours sanding without even realising. My biggest worry now is that I am running out of Sandpaper :(

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

that is the part that sucks you get going and when you realize you need to look at supplies you find that they are dwindling to nothing fast ... I am about to go finish fiber glassing my helmet so that I can start on the bondo stage myself ... but all in all I find that I am trying to keep up with you even though I have a lot more of the armor pepped out already ... just because of the stage you are in on your helmet ... keep the motivational pace going mykii ...

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

to be honest my next big build will be trying to make a full steel ironman. I have a budget of $100 :p

Same here but my budget is £0.00 :love I'm hoping to score some sheet metal at the local works but as yet I haven't even asked them what metals they use, Aircraft Ali would be so cool :love

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

LMAO, that quote was actually a joke related to a topic that happened a while ago where the guy said he would do it. But go for it Cyber!

Yeah Saber, I did another 7 hours of sanding today, I don't think I have any skin left on my finger tips :p
I'm estimating that it will take me another 2 weeks of work time till it is completed. (Thats working time not real time) :D

Don't rush Saber. Please dont, that was my problem and I broke the rear of the helmet because it wasnt Fibreglassed properly.

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

oh crap that sucks ... can you repair your helmet? I am taking it slowly ... why do you think I feel rushed to keep up with you ... I could be building it faster but I am waiting for the right conditions outside to fiberglass and I am messing with techniques to strengthen it ... I have pepped both my helmet and back twice now to get them the way I want them ... I have the spine part of the back done on the third attempt and am really liking this time around so I will keep this back piece I think ... I will post some pics on my thread real quick to show you

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

Great progress on your build, same thing happened to me when I was making my helmet, just glass it up inside and continue through!!
Keep going big guy!!

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

I applaud you! you're moving along nicely. Its hard enough sanding with my mouse, i get frustrated sanding with the 7-8 hours i put in on days when I can. you must have some serious patience. Keep Building!....
