you wanna talk jealous ... I have not begun the process of fiberglassing the inside yet and that is what i want to get done so that i can start to bring out the details of the helmet already ... it kills me to be staring at it unfinished already but i must keep to the road i have chosen to travel so no regrets ... just feels like being a kid the night before christmas ... lol ... congrats on the job though mykii ... now we should hopefully see a full suit from you

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah, definitely! Once I get my first set of pay I will be getting some essentials!

New Respirator
Grey Primer
Sandpaper
Filler/Bondo
Resin (I've Ran out!:O )

I will get some progress pics up once I have finished the whole fibreglass inside Chimmera. And thankyou for the nice comment. I agree, had a huge load of bad luck over the last 2 weeks. I get attacked then 3 days later I catch a bout of Bronchitus.Still getting rid of it, oh well, it is just small bumps on the road to having the full suit.

Don't be jealous Saber, just keep going at your pace. If I had the money and patience I'd have done the same as you. I wanted to use resin/fibreglass before doing another part to see if I was any good at it so I didn't waste a buttload of money. Your build is awesome.

What should I build next? Neck or boots?

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

the neck ... I say build the neck and work your way down from there so that yo can see how each peice works with the next one

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah, was thinking that. But was also thinking of doing the boots since I want to see if I'm going to need some new boots/shoes to go with them.

Although, am worried about the neck piece since I'm worried about cutting it.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

it seems small to me so you may want to resize it a fair amount ... I am 5'9 160 lbs and it seems small so your build should be larger that will include shoes ... i thought from the pep file though that shoes were not needed? that what it looks like to me anyway

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Which PEP file are you using?
I picked up some Grey Primer but I'm a fool, I have no idea how to use it :S

Do I need to sand down some of the outside resin before spraying it on or do I just spray it on the resin as is? ARGH! Confused!

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

since you got some pointers on sanding/primer in your other thread, i'm looking forward to progress pics!

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Don't bother wasting your primer by using it before the filler. The filler (David's P38 or UPOL Easysand from Halfords for example) will be grey. This will give you enough even colour/coverage to see the dings, dents, scratches that need to be sanded out. THEN use the primer to fine tune the surface ready for top coat. Skim the filler on a smoothly as you can. Take your time. Do 10 passes if you need to....it will reduce your sanding time.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

vos is right ... apply resin as even as possible to eliminate sanding needs as much ... but you will see high and low spots pretty easy once you fiberglass or rondo the inside ... that is where you start applying the bondo to the o side then you sand and get it as close as possible to what you want then you will primer to seal it all in and then paint ... anyway though i am using robo's markiv/markvi files for my build ... keep that in mind for the sizing i will try to get some pics of parts on me to show size comparison monday k

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Cheers Sabre.
Going to need to scale badly. Once I've got some time I may get some photos of myself so you can understand the build that I have to work with :p

Thankyou so much Vos. Big help. I'm getting some filler very, very soon. Shouldnt be too long. Going to get some more resin/fibreglass too since I just have a little bit more to do on the inside then I'll be finished on the inside and time for the very fun part.

Few Questions
Do you need to sand down the face of the resin before applying filler or will the filler grab/take to it instantly? And do you apply it to the full outside or just parts?

What grades of Sandpaper am I going to need? I hear so many different grades, Wet and Dry,220 etc? I want the best finish possible, smooth to the core :p

Cheers for all the help so far EVERYONE! It keeps me going.

PS: Is this the one I need?

Sorry, I'm learning as I go.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

You can lightly key the resin, although both filler and fibreglass resin are polyester, so they will bond together naturally. I would try to skim over the whole helmet. You will sand back through to the fibreglass anyway in places as you block over the curves.

For the best finish, you will need to work through ALL of the grades. Start at 80/120/180 depending on your filler skimming, then 240, 320, 400, 600, 800, 800 wet, 1000 wet and finally 1200 wet. Use the 1000 and 1200 once you have some primer on...this will give you a glass-like finish. Skip any out and you'll more than likely have scratches you can't get rid of....you can go on heavy with a decent high-build primer to fill the scratches, but this is a bit of a bodge (I do it all the time :LOL). I'd use 1200 on your top coat too...between coats. Then you finish up by polishing. T-Cut will do the job, but there are some better compounds out there.

Yep, the David's is good stuff. Halfords do a UPOL too...I prefer it.

well vos beat me again ... yes though it would be like finishing auto body imperfections if you have ever done that ... it takes a lot of sanding layers upon layers o get a great finish but well worth it in the end ... don't skip any of the steps and you will have a great finish as long as you thoroughly sand the entire surface evenly ... you can also look at 3m bondo it may be cheaper for you if you buy it in half gallons ... but better half gallon it if you plan to go toward the whole suit

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah, we dont have 3M over here Saber. Good ol' UK!

Cheers for the big help Vos, it really does help as I want it to look perfect. I'll happily take another month just sanding etc if it means I come out with something that will make me happy.

Got to get this done really soon, getting really fidgetty with just wanting to sit down and concentrate on it.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

do you have anything comparable to 3m bondo in the UK? I wonder if someone here in the us can order it and ship it to you without it being illegal ... are there laws against 3m bondo in the UK for any reason?

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Not that I know of. I think alot of people here just use Davids or Isopon so no need for 3M. We will see when I start to use it very soon, although, starting to think this thing is going to turn out very very heavy :p

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

yeah ... I am pretty sure this thing is not gonna feel like it started out made of paper when we are done lol ... oh well ... I hope it lasts long enough to wear repeatedly to functions and stuff

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

i think the bondo does way down the pieces a bit, but if you find it too heavy you can alwayslook into making molds of your pieces and casting them in a lighter plastic. that's the route i'd eventually like to take

Not if you use a light coat. I'm only using 1 coat of bondo and it's kept that light weight feel and is enough bondo to get it super smooth.
