Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 05/05/2011 - Pg 4)

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah, I would definatley recommend rondo, you can fully harden a helmet in a few hours. It's so quick. Basically it's just mixing a bit of resin into the body filler to thin it out so once you mix in the hardener you can just paint the inside with it.

And the tutorial subforum is a great idea, some of the info you need to help make the iron man suit doesn't apply to other stuff so it can be really hard to find.
woooh thats now two people that will have taken my advice about rondo!
haha:lol

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

mykii ... you are farther along getting your bucket wearable than I am ... I was curious so I could see if you had some advice during the resin stage but you answered it anyway so good stuff ... looking good ... you need to do the whole suit now

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah, I want to do the whole suit but I've already said that I want to complete the helmet before I even think about other parts so that way if my sanding skills leave a lot to be desired then I'll think about practicing on smaller parts etc to get the skills better. Money is very scarce for me and am finding it hard just getting the stuff together for this. Cheers for the enthusiasm though :D

The rondo idea sounds pretty dang cool. I think that a great tutorial could help a lot. Maybe if someone had the time (and resources) maybe make a very thorough tutorial. Maybe doing a cut in half ironman helmet so we can see the best way to apply. Reason I say cut in half is because the camera angle would be very difficult to see if doing the full helmet. (Can't we tell I'm a video editor :p )

The tutorial subforum would completely rock, but we shall stick to doing this ironman resource thread to begin with since its the only thing we have so far of its kind other than the official pepakura thread. Going to take time to accumilate all the necessary information but we can do it!

Cheers all for your comments. It helps me keep the enthusiasm necessary to build it.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

if i'm not mistaken, you should be able to find some pretty good videos on youtube for alternatives to fiberglassing the inside (such as rondo). you might want to poke around there a little bit and see what you can find. if i find anything good i'll post

EDIT:

Rondo clip 0

Rondo clip 1

Rondo clip 2

i've watched these and they are great! hope this helps

Sweet, I'll have a watch of those soon.

Got beat up by a gang of guys last night so nursing some bruised ribs and a few bruises everywhere.

So will be up to getting this done soon once I have some brushes.

Could have done with the Ironman suit last night, definitely wouldnt have been whopping my arse!

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

All I know is that I've got a wheezy chest and cuts across my chest.

From sounds of things I got in quite a few gooduns on them too.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Anyways, a week almost past, I'm back and been working a little on the suit. The Fibreglassing is going well, although have to say it is very difficult. Although, goes exceptionally hard once cured. Hoping to have the whole fibreglass finished by the end of the week so that I can start on getting the whole thing primed up so I can see the things I need to sand down and then fill it up and start sanding it together properly!

Anyone that has any tips on how to get the facemask off please list ideas. Also, any UK people know a decent grey to get for Primer? Hope everyone is sweet and enjoying oscars night!

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

once you fiberglass the bucket you can dremel off the faceplate with a cutting wheel that was my plan for getting it off anyways

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah my biggest worry for it though is that it will be flat with no tabs going down.

For instance

¬ = With Tab
- = Without Tab

Do you understand what I mean?

I don't want it to look flat.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

I understand completely .. can you razor off the faceplate after doing the outer coat of resin then do the fiberglassing on the parts separate

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah, That is what I am guessing. Possibly having to Pep up some 1 cm wide pieces of Cardboard and then superglue them to it and resin over it and then fibreglass it to the inside etc then filler and repaint! Could be a lot of hard work just to make it look more 3d, but should essentially be worth it, but that of course it a long way into the future!

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

what i have seen some people do, is right after you pep the helmet, they attach the faceplate and back piece with clips and then resin the outise and remove the clips from the inside, and the faceplate holds its shape and you harden it separately.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

Yeah, well, I'm so far only planning on doing this helmet and not making another one until this one is finished. Love the idea of the clips and cheers for the help.

Probably going to go through the idea that I said, if I decide to make a moving faceplate in the future. But main aim so far is to get the whole suit finished.

Re: Ironman Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 19/2/11)

So, done another bit of Fibreglass. Probably only got another 2 more bits to go then the whole inside will have been fibreglassed. Definitely going to think about doing the rondo application next time since this fibreglass is really annoying and awkward. Either that or I'll do Fibreglass on the really big bits and then rondo over the lot of it for the joints so the main body is completely solid. Then structurally it will be fine.

I also managed to get a job! :D Meaning, yes, I'll be having a little less time to work on the whole suit etc but it means I'll have a steady flow of money for me to start getting the ingredients needed to bake the perfect cake so to speak.

I'm itching to get my hands on some primer so I can spray the outside and gather how much I really have to do.
