Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 05/05/2011 - Pg 4)

re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

Thankyou ever so much to everyone!
I had an interview today and got the job :D Meaning more money and that means more parts.

The damage is minimal. Just the parts on the bottom that will be fixed with some more fibreglass which will be a good thing. But yeah, damage can be fixed!

Cheers BlackDynamo. I'm loving sanding right now, although it is strenuous task. Going to try and get a decent dremel and sander soon as need to start moving along with time. Still have the rest of the suit to build yet with a target of July. Although, trying to find a decent mannequin as well :S

Hopefully some updates in the next few days as very close to having the whole helmet FULLY bondo'd!

Hey to everyone.
Not an update on the helmet as such but an update to let people know I am still alive and thinking of this.
I am very busy with work and shall soon get my first pay packet so I can make some more work on the helmet. AWESOME!!

So, anyway, I've entered a competition that depends on votes to get to the final round. Would appreciate your help guys and girls please!

I was wondering where you were? Good to see you still interesed in your build...

Re: Iron Man Mark III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 27/3/11 - Pg 4)

in response to the boots i found that a pair of crocs work best. they're relatively inexpensive and very comfortable as a plus you can slip them on quickly

Hey All

This is my first project and having seen so many great projects this already left me with a great weight on my shoulders wanting to come bearing a gift to the eyes and not a monstrosity so let's explain my project.

I'm going to create an Ironman suit, preferably a Mark 3 suit, but will use other parts if they fit better. I have been a fan of Ironman for years and Marvel even longer. When the movies came out I was in total awe. So there is the project and also the explanation as to why I'm doing it.

Materials used
[£0.00] 01 x Leftover 220 G/M2 Cardstock
[£2.50] 04 x Loctite Superglue
[£8.99] 02 x David's Fastglass Kits (Contains Resin, Hardener, Fibremat etc)
[£0.60] 14 x Paintbrushes
[£6.99] 01 x Halford's Primer (Grey 500ml)
[£6.69] 02 x David's Isopon P38 Filler
[£3.49] 01 x Halford's Sandpaper 120 grit

Total So Far
£60.24

First Update
So here come the pics!

This first picture is the right side of the helmet where I decided to start my project. I found this part difficult at first but after a couple hours of practicing the folds I was starting to get to grips with the way Pepakura works.

1.jpg

This second picture shows I started to add the back part of helmet next. It proceeded to get trickier as I progressed but was noticing how the Valley/Mountain folds worked meaning it became easier to recognise the shape it would take.

2.jpg

The third picture shows how I progressed to do another side so I now had a 3 sided helmet which to me was starting to look rather good considering I'd never used Pep before.

3.jpg

This fourth picture shows how I had added some more height to the rear of the helmet and also started to make the jaw of the helmet. This progressed quicker than the first part as I was now getting used to the process of pep making.

4.jpg

This fifth picture shows how I had finally got the look of a face to it. Was finally starting to feel proud of myself. Yes, I know, it isn't exactly the most amazing piece of work known to man but to me it was awesome!

Finally, the finished piece!

buildpep.jpg

So here you go, my finished PEP product. I have really enjoyed doing this and will be looking to do resin/fibreglass/bondo in the next month once I have acquired some money. So any tips would be very, very helpful as I've never ever used resin, fibreglass or bondo!

Going off to Halfords tomorrow to pick up some Resin and fingers crossed if can afford it the Fibreglass sheets and bondo/bodyfiller.

Also I would like to thank Kagn, TMP, Robo, Dancing_Fool and Dung0Beetle for the inspiration for getting me going.

Second Update // 11th February 2011

resin1.jpg

Half a coat of resin onto the helmet done. And boy, this stuff really smells. Looking forward to getting this helmet fully resined up with 3 coats and fibreglassed.

Third Update // 19th February 2011

Added the 3 layers of Resin to the helmet and added some Fibreglass to the inside. Was completely shocked when it dried as well. Very very tough.

Cheers for reading!

MykiiAmore

PS. I have these boots at home and was wondering if they would work well to use as the base boots for my costume. And If I did would it be possible to take them out of the costume to use for my wrestling needs again!

Also, if you are from the UK and have any ideas about resources I can use (Card, glue, resin, filler etc) please let me know as I am still finding it hard to find areas where to buy theses things.

Big Thankyou goes to;

Kagn
For being such a great help and inspiration throughout my project so far. You are a complete legend and I can only hope to be half as good as you when I have eventually finished.

Also, thankyou for the inspiration;
TMP, Dancin_Fool, Dungbeetle, Sharkhead, MaulFett, Robo and the RPF Community!

facemask.jpg

An update. Long overdue, but got my dremel. Now time to start getting it nearer to completion. Going to be a while since I am busy working 35 hour weeks and that is before I add in Gym time (to slim down to look more starky :p) and looking after my brother (Who broke his leg 2 weeks ago :S )

Cheers for everyone's support
(And all the people who told me I probably shouldnt remove the facemask :p )

Aye Carumba that's not good, your obviously a good big brother (or awesome little brother) :love

Is the faceplate holding it's shape now?

if the helmet lost its shape, take a heat gun to it. you might have to repair a few cracks in the bondo but it would hold its shape better

Yeah, I'm just working out the areas I shall need to edit like that. There are a couple and will be hard to do it, but shall ive it a try when I have some time. I get paid on the 25th so should be able to pick up some more materials.

Re: Iron Man Mk III - First Build - Pic Heavy (UPDATE 15/3/11 - Pg 4)

comin together nicely

as a body repairer i would nt bother buying fibreglass kits or using small tins of body filler from car accessory shops, bloody expensive
find your local fibreglass suppliers 5 litres resin 3 metres mat +catalyst £35 goes a long way nearest one to me is in leeds
for filler local car bodyshop suppliers upol easy sand app £17 3kg tin

Hey fingaz, could you post or pm the suppliers in Leeds you mentioned please? I'm in the area and I could do with a local supplier of fibreglass.

Also, I can recommend SupaDec super glue which is locally manufactured. I get it from Craftwise (possibly my favourite little hobby shop) in the Merrion Market but you can find it online. So much better value than buying those little Loctite bottles.

Nice progress btw MykiiAmore; Iron Man is on my list of suits to get round to some day - T45d being my first attempt at a full suit and my current build.

In addition to the super glue supplier I mentioned, I can recommend www.cfsnet.co.uk who do mail order fibreglass supplies. Nice selection and value, particularly good abrasive papers, though the courier cost makes it worth ordering lots at once. They also do cheap, disposable resin brushes, which I wash and reuse a couple of times.

I'm curently getting my body filler from Halfords if you have any better suggestions...?

CFS's prices are cheaper than Halfords U-Pol brand so it'll be worth getting a large tub from them, not sure if they only do ready mixed stuff though so you'll have to check that out.

If people want to post links to these places please feel free to.
I am trying to get into the rhthym of doing some more of this after work but after a long 8 hour shift plus 1 hour of travelling I feel so naff I dont feel like touching it.
I'd rather be fresh minded and do it than feel naff and ruin it!

Sorry for no updates, I feel so ashamed!
