So...they screwed another asian actor out of another high-profile film role for fear of making a fu-manchu stereotype out of a character intended to be a fu-manchu stereotype.

I try not to stereotype. Whilst seing your point. Ben kingsley is a master class actor and fits the character well. I would think thats all that matters. If the director thought.. oh... Sir kingsley would be good. I think you have a point in general. But at the same time. The main bad guy in a mega blockbuster cant just be given to a not well known actor without risk. Its hard for me to convey. I wont spoil. How can I say it lol. A Chinese character doesnt necessarily fit the bill. Youll see. Lol.
Plus.. its easy to say they are all stereotyped. Plenty of films have americans and britains as the bad guys. Its always the little things that stand out I think. Not the general things.

But the character is called the MANDARIN. Casting a non asian over fears of racism is just ridiculous.
And Splinter is being played by a caucasian dwarf in the new tmnt movie?
Hollywood is no friend to asian actors despite there being a good selection of talented asian actors who are also well known.

Why are fears ridiculous? I had a feeling this post stemmed from the TMNT thread. We live in a society where people jump on a race war band wagon constantly...Surely you see that? Perhaps I'll get hated here but do you know of the Michael Bay Fiasco? Accused of racism about the Twins. Even though I know of plenty of white people that have gold teeth and talk like they did. It's ridiculous. But regardless, they have to not offend people as its money that matters.
The MANDARIN wore a bright green costume but it means nothing. Doesn't mean he has to have one in this movie.
I find I'm trying to make points here when none even need to be made.
You acting like because he is called the MANDARIN then he MUST be an Asian actor.
Perhaps you could suggest such an Asian actor that springs to mind?
Bear in mind they will be going up against Ben Kingsley.
And seeing the film I know they will probably fail but I won't post spoilers.

I'm not trying to be nasty but saying the MANDARIN being played by a non Asian is screwing over Asian actors is ridiculous!
The fact that Kingsley played it so well makes his acting even more impressive. And I thank the casting crew for seeing his potential for the role and not just casting someone because they are Asian.

My point is valid and it's that recasting a character of Chinese descent with decades of publication history for fear of offending is ridiculous.
Once again, Chinese/ Japanese are being under represented in film. Losing parts they deserve to play.
Then again, the three biggest superheroes Batman, Superman and Spiderman are now all British, so what do I know.

perhaps as an individual point it is valid. But not relevant. You make it sound as though you actually KNOW that they purposely did not cast an Asian character for that sole reason. Opposed to casting the correct actor for the job. That would have to be the situation for your point to be relevant...
The only problem with your point is the Mandarin presented in the film isn't the Mandarin presented in the comics. It's a different character. He isn't a sorcerer with magical alien rings, he is a radical terrorist.

I understand that we're getting a different interpretation of the character. But the only reason we're getting that different interpretation is that the film makers felt casting an asian actor to play what had been for decades a character of Chinese descent would constitute some form of racism.

His performance was good, but purists of the Mandarin character will not be happy, that I can tell you.Can't wait to see Sir Ben. I hear his performance is full of win.
For those who seen the movie, I'm curious if a certain scene made it in the film. I was an extra during the beach bar filming where Tony Stumbles out and has some exchange with Rhodey, then takes off. Did that make it in?
