Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print in hand

Bimmer, i think you're seeing this the right way!! Clearly this post is all about saying that in a near future, printing tech will become mainstream and available to everyone much more easily! And then artist will turn much more the digital way although we all know that there's still its place for the manual work!

Seriously, taking this post any other way is just wrong!! And this thread should get back on topis asap and not post anything else about this!!

Now, keep showing off Clinton, you know we just want more! :-D

Guys it's the Mark42 always was. I didn't start the thread with that title as no one would know what I was talking about at the time, everyone knew it as the Mark VIII when I put this up. ;)

I'm sure if you read the thread, you wouldn't have to ask the question! :)

Edit: I feel good tonight .. check post 28 .. sigh!

Wont be doing any finished helemts for awhile. Just raw casts for the time being, so no real difference in what you've already seen. It would just be black instead of grey. ;)

This looks amazing. I'm curious though, there seemed to be a lot of clean up that needed/needs to be done. As I've never worked worth the 3d printing, do you find this to be the case? The initial prints look done to me (from afar) but when you shot close ups I see the texture. Is it easy to sand the print material or would you advise working from casts... As I know the prints can be expensive.

He has said in the past that sintered prints don't sand well. Instead, some small amount of body filler is used to smooth out the shallow print texture before molding.

I'd really love to hear your process too Finhead. In my mind, it goes like this:

1. Get the print (WSF)
2. Create a waste mold
3. Get a copy that will become your master.
4. Create master mold.
5. Make your runs from it.

Because you basically don't wanna mess up your print, I'm guessing you don't work directly on it. That means that first mold is completely useless after that pull since the material is so porous? You can always reuse it if you mess up your master cast I guess .. but so many time before it tears up!?

Nope on all accounts.
I work straight off the print, you can't mold the SWF pieces as the nylon is far too porous and the silicone would never dettach from the master.
Primer and filler with a lot of sanding to smooth out all the texture that comes off the print once primed. No secret just work. ;)

Damn! I guess I'm just not confident enough that I would completely mess up that print! :D Should have known differently coming from you! :thumbsup

looks like you will do it proud, I think I prefer the round ear parts on older helmets.
interesting just the same

that looks so amazing >< one question tho, after you have a mould from the 3d print, how do you cast it so that its hollow?

I think he already said he's working straight from the print, not molding, because the nylon is too porous and he wouldn't be able to lift the print from the negative...
