Inspiration for Jubal Early's pistol?

I was looking at photos of old firearms, particularly Luger carbines, and I came upon a photo of a 1893 Bittner repeating pistol. It immediately made me think of Jubal Early's pistol in "Firefly". A site with photos: http://www.horstheld.com/0-Bittner.htm

some similarities but i think Early's pistol was an original build not based on any gun.
