This is my 3rd attempt
The first 2 we’re foam board and I basically tried using a soldering iron to burn the writing on the first attempt and the second one , I used an etching dremel

You can see how I made this last one
I used the same etching tool

Very big difference in appearance and I’m thrilled with the outcome using plaster to make stone . Much more rewarding with the finished project

Scratch building a grail diary as well.
Making the book and then I’m hand writing the entire thing. All pages now sewn together, glued, trimmed and ready for the cover

On to the cover. This is a remnants piece from Hobby Lobby that I felt would look and feel the best. I also used a lighter cardboard so I can keep it flimsy and easy to bend like they did in the movie . I marked all my measurements and glued the boards on the leather. Now it’s a sit back and wait period.
I covered it with a piece of paper and heavy box to hold it tight

Ok, so 2 bad choices but 2 really good ones
Good
Loved my choice of leather
Loved my choice of the cardboard backer. Gives me the exact look and feel I was hoping for

Bad
Used wrong adhesive
Cut width too short- just barley goes past the edge of the book. The top and bottom were perfect . Only needed to change the width.
The poor choice of adhesive left marks and hard spots on the surface which didn’t allow me to fully crease and adhere the flaps that wrap inside the cover.

I really do like the look and feel I have with the cover choice so I’m excited to redo it

Success. I’m thrilled with the outcome and can’t wait to start writing in it. Bends and twists just the way I’d hoped. Indy really liked to beat up his Dads diary:lol:

I just need to get the rest of the missing pages and off I go. I might even start to beat this thing up to begin the weathering process.

Love your work on these props! I think a rubbing off that tablet would even be frameable!
Is there a good high rez scan of the leap of faith?
I pulled one off google. I did actually print 4 more of these and glued them to the canvas boards. They are laser printed. I was thinking about putting them in the junkyard in case others wanted them.

Weathered it up a little
Plan is to smash it up now and again and not go easy on it while writing. I’m not going to weather or mess with the pages until it’s finished. The last time I tried to write in a weathered book, It kept messing the ink up with the dull spots on the paper.

Still missing some pages and hopefully someone can help me out with that. I'm going Hero on this one. Missing 15 pages, mostly the text pages.

Re doing my Grail. I bought the unpainted kit from Ebay and it is actually very close to accurate after doing some research.

I was going for actual fired clay; however, this resin version is really good. It just never made me happy with the finish I gave it. I tried paint, rub n buff and finally used the fingernail powder and that wasn't too bad. Still lacked so I started over.

This is my first attempt. I added patina to make it look old and more authentic. I was happy with that stage, however the paint was lacking

My 2nd attempt with the nail polish powder-not bad for the Idol, just didn't like the grail.

Gold leaf is definitely better on the grail, but the nail polish powder looks great on the idol!
Thank you. I agree for sure that the Idol benefitted with the powder. Very lacking with the cup. Made it look smooth.

I'm very happy with the inside of the cup however, the outside gold defiantly needs to be dulled down. I'm going to get some matt clear coat and see what happens

I used a sanding sponge to dull it down some and I’m happy with the outcome. Now I’m going to dry brush some more wear in this and then I’m going to test a dull lacquer finish on the outside of the cup leaving the inside the way it is now. I have researched many many pictures of the so called screen used however, none look the same so I’m now convinced there is no real hero version of this.
There’s a few versions used at different times including the one with a ball bearing on the bottom used to roll the cup into the falling floor when it crashes to the rocky ledge below. I decided to just make it look the best results that I’d be happy with and call it

Now I’m also wanting to make a display for my Sankara Stones

I decided to make part of the skull so it would fit on my top shelf. I made the base out of foam stacking 4 pieces to get the depth I wanted. Then mocked a rough design and began to carve out the shape. Next step is to coat it with plaster or Paris sheets and then I will do more shaping by adding modeling textures used for making train scenery and landscapes

Here’s a work in progress

Some advice when using foam for props and or display bases.

First and most important, use a respirator while cutting with the heat tools

Almost as important, don’t rely on foam holding your piece if you make a display base like I did.
I made a foam base for my Idol and came home to a crashed face planted Idol on my desk because the foam caved in just enough for it to loose balance and fall over. Luckily enough nothing was broken

These stones are heavy so I’m going to make a wooden stand to secure the foam base to so I don’t relive the same mistake
