Indiana Jones Fedora

alright indy gurus

does anyone know where I would be able to get a close to authentic looking indy fedora for, I wanna say cheap to descently priced? or at least an idea of where to look.

The best budget Indy Fedora available is the Akubra Federation:

It's a rabbit felt hat, but it comes open crowned so you need to bash/shape it yourself.

Here's mine after a quick and dirty Raiders' bash:

The one used by Ford in the movies is a Herbert Johnson. You can get them from Todd's Costumes: http://www.toddscostumes.com/indy/HJ%20Ind...nson_fedora.htm, but mind you, the block used to make these newer hats are not quite the same as the ones in the movies, so if you're going for the Raiders look, they may prove to be a letdown.

If you wanna go all the way, look no further than Steve Delk's Adventurebilt: http://www.adventurebilthats.com

What is the Akubra Federation made from, wool or felt? Anyone know? That price seems awfully cheap.

I believe it's felt. I have the federation deluxe. It's a little bit more money, but it's a damn fine hat. I've had mine for 4 or 5 years and looks good as new. And it fits like a glove.

I find the biggest problem with fedoras is that people don't wear them often enough and complain about the fit. You really need to break it in. But once it does, you forget you even have it on.

Yeah, it's fur felt. Good quality hats, they really take a beating too. The standard Fed's are a GREAT hat for the money.

The Fed deluxe is basically the same hat but with a higher quality felt.

Thanks, gents. I'm sold. I have an old Brown Stetson that I wear a lot (I wore it today) that's still in decent shape, as well as an identical gray one that hasn't held up as well, so I'd like to replace it without dropping $200 on another Stetson. I'll give the Akubra a shot. :thumbsup

You won't be disappointed.

Just keep in mind that both feds are basically Indy hats and have very straight, tall sides (which is great for an Indy look, but sort of out of place elsewhere).

I wear my Indy fedora once fall starts to roll around. I have my brown one for everyday use and I have a black one that I wear with darker suits (navy, dark charcoal and black).

But now I'm in the market for a lighter grey one one to go with a grey suit I just picked up, but I don't know if I should go with another Indy or a different style...

Any oppinions out there? Either a grey standard federation or one of the other styles? The suit is actually a grey sport coat and charcoal slacks, but a modern cut so I don't know if the bogart style fedora would work with it. Or any fedora for that matter. Decisions, decisions...

I had a steel grey Optimo a while back (now sold) - sill an Indy style lid, but that was a very nice hat. Amazing soft felt on those Optimos.

I have both an Akubra Federation regular and deluxe, and they're great hats.

Here's my deluxe:

The color and softness of the felt on the deluxe makes it a superior choice, but either one are great hats, and if your size is in stock you can have your hat in about four days.

I know people that have waited over four months for an Adventurebilt, which for some people might be too long.

A few hat pics I've dug out from deep within my HD... ;)
