Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings Jade Sphere. Updated 1/2/2010

I’m not sure how many folks out here are into the Indiana Jones video games, but my daughter and I had a blast playing Staff of Kings. After completing it we thought it would be fun to create our own version of the Jade Sphere to add to our Indy collection. I had a couple different options for a way to go with this idea, but I pretty much made up my mind early on that I wanted my sphere to be translucent. Here is what we have so far. The pictures were taken right after it was pulled from the mold over the weekend. While I know it’s not perfect, I’m still pretty satisfied with the way it turned out. My favorite thing about it is the way it looks when you back light it. I have a stand in the works which contains an LED light to illuminate it from underneath for display. If anyone is interested I’ll be happy to post more pictures once it's completed. :)

wow! what material did you use to get it translucent?

Re: Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings Jade Sphere.

It's just clear resin with a little green and white color added. I found out while making some test samples that you really have to be careful with the white. It's seems to be a bit denser than some of the other pigments and it is pretty easy to turn your clear piece cloudy enough so that no light can pass through.

Is it solid?, is it heavy I have a Tomb raider 2 Cradle of life Orb that i wanna put in silicone and then make a clear resin copy. I would be happy if you could show some pictures of the mold so i know how to make mine when the time comes.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the feedback. :thumbsup

The sphere is solid cast from 34oz of clear resin, about 4.5” in diameter and weighs just less than 2 lbs. Here’s a shot of the mold I made. I ended up using a little more material than I thought it would take. Well over a gallon of silicone rubber. Then again, I have a bad habit of making my mold walls thicker than they probably need to be. It would have looked better too if the model would have stayed centered with the mold. It shifted to one side on me after the first pour. Not exactly what I would call pretty, but it still worked. :rolleyes

For those who have been asking… Here is an update on my Jade Sphere project. In keeping with the Mayan background of the prop I decided I wanted the base/stand for it to have the look of a Mayan Pyramid carved from stone. Getting the detail I wanted took a little time, but so far I like the results. I have three alternating LED lights inside the pedestal that the sphere rests on which give it a glowing effect when powered on. Now I just need to weather both the sphere and the stand a bit to give them a more aged look.
