Indi leap of faith in ons day

So I (almost) finished my ep7 concept light saber and have a day off from work with my wife taking the kids to a mother blog meeting, she has a pretty big dutch blog for mothers, and i needed something to do. Luckily I printed Alan Castillo's leap of faith picture at work a few days ago so the choice was easy.

I cut a board for the picture from 3,6mm triplex I use making medieval shields. I had some old shelves laying around so I took one and cut is to size for the back board. Using a chisel I made three lines to get the appearance that it was made from four boards. I also used the chisel to cut some marks in the ends to give the wood an aged appearance.

Using a black wash I darkened the wood and weathering it. Finally I used a brown transparent lacquer on the back board to give it a more aged look and weathering the scratches even more.

Now I just have to wait for the lacquer to dry and I can finish it.

But what will be the next project? I've got the grail tablet template from IndyQuest and some spare foam so that might be a good choice. Or the shield from the last crusade, haven't made a choice yet

It's a smaller than SA. I printed the image 22cm x 28,3 cm, that's about 60% of the SA size I found. I also made a SA sized print but I felt that it was to big for my taste. And at this size I may even get to hang it on the wall, my wife doesn't always like my creations.

I finally got some time to take a photo of the finished leap of faith. For scale I put the sword I wore at my wedding next to it.

It really was a one day build, that is to say within 24 hours. The most time was waiting for first the paint and then the glue to dry.

I would recommend this prop to beginning prop makers. It's easy but uses different skills. Mostly woodworking and painting. You can start simple by just using the print as is, or take it up a stap bij painting the gold parts on the print as I did (base of silver then the gold), or you could go even further by using leaf gold. For the base you could use a single board as I did or make a base from lose boards.
