Independence Day: Resurgence (Post-release)

I dont understand how you can think that was cool. It was so spoonfed it was ridiculous. Im pissed I took a girl to see this movie, because it cost me double. It was SO AWFUL. The only thing that was semi-cool about this movie was how the alien queen looked in the end, the CGI was really good. Everything was a rehash, nothing made sense, even regarding the smallest things like bill pullmans character, the awful writing for pretty much EVERY character, the pandering to the chinese, which frankly Im sick of. Like others have mentioned, the writing was abysmal, and the attempts at humor were SO awful. I dont get how Roland Emmerich gets funding for his movies. Whoever green lit that script should be fired. :facepalm

And diet thor is the worst, but Will Smith 2.0 is even worse. Its like Diet Thor knew he was the star of the movie and nothing bad could happen to him. It was SO cheesy, and not in a good way either, it was just bad. I wouldnt even pirate this movie.

Don't forget the PokeBall sphere. I wonder if that was intentional to appeal to chinese gaming audiences.

The problem with this one is that it had no heart. it had no flow. It's like they came up with the idea of the alien queen, and wrote a movie around that.

The part with pullman.

It was pretty clear he was emotionally fine after his encounter with the alien in the first one. I don't know what I expected from him...but being branded as crazy certainly wasn't it. and the coma cop out was incredibly stupid.

Also interesting how mostly the old cast got killed off. goldblum was too big, judd was comic releif...and spiner so popular they invented the coma excuse...

I also love the movies big Frig You to will smith... don't want to do our movie? we'll just kill you off. IN A TRAINING ACCIDENT no less...

Haha Im not sure about that, I think it was just a lazy attempt to make it seem benevolent. I cmon, a sphere. Thats it. With a line in it.

Yeah, and the Dad being a jerk to the kids in the vehicles? Every part with every character was awful. Even Data was too over the top and ridiculous, he comes out of a coma and then he is in charge of the entire area 51 complex again. The inept secret service agent that was in charge of Pullman, the stupid daughter character. Every was horrible. How the aliens broke out of their sells and had guns. The relationship with Data and his assistant. Im surprised my eyes didnt get stuck because they were rolled the entire time I was watching this movie.

I'm curious, did they try firing air-to-air missiles at the spaceship again in this one? I found that laughable in the original, like a bunch of missiles with warheads amounting to a couple pounds of explosive, at most, that kills its targets through fragmentation could do anything to a spaceship that's at least a mile in diameter. I would have been lobbing cruise missiles and have everything capable of carrying a bomb flying over it and carpet bombing it instead. Hopefully they learned their lesson this time and actually threw some real firepower at the ship(s).

I was wondering why they didn't try the computer virus again. I'm sure there would have been a reason it would fail this time, but still...

Actually the "guns" made from the alien tech was strong enough to go right through the enemy fighter shields and after quite a few shots it could get through thicker shields too.

The problem I had with the missiles in the first one was not the fact that the aliens had shields, but that an air-to-air missile would have been entirely ineffective against something the size of those motherships. Like I said previously, those missiles don't much of a warhead and are designed to take out their target via fragmentation, like a hand grenade, as opposed to blowing their target to pieces like a bomb. So, even without shields those missiles wouldn't have done much unless the ships were made of paper mache or had a lot of very important and delicate systems along the outer rim of the hull.

It sounds like they kind of improved upon that problem a little in this movie, but still not enough in my opinion. Even though they're capable of getting through the shields of the mothership(s) with enough shots it still amounts to hitting a massive structure miles across with what amounts to pea shooter.

Definitely a fair point for the 1st one. In this one though the bombers were loaded up with "fusion bombs/rockets" and they were trying to hit the queen portion of the ship. This was after the 3rd party told them if the queen dies the ship would go away. :)

Dunno... I had fun. didn't expect much, it IS Independence Day after all. Took me a long time to appreciate the first one, which was hardly a masterpiece.

Also, I don't think the spherical ship was pandering to Chinese, as much as it was an homage to 2001....

Saw it last night. Man was that...really not good. Yes, nearly beat-by-beat retelling of the first film, competent, if boring performances, some very nice effects sequences (crap raining down on London was pretty entertaining), some really bad looking sequences (the bombers flying out of the hangar - yikes), an inexplicably poor piece of voice casting (The stupid sphere alien), some patently stupid crap (okay, so the queen has a building-sized gun, decides she needs to destroy the bus and instead of just stopping and SHOOTING the damn thing she...bumbles around after it), the most awkward, tacked on setup for a (ha-ha, dream on, Roland) series of sequels, and, yes, the sucking up to the Chinese audience was egregious, forced, and kept stopping the narrative (such as it was) to make me think "just how much DID the Chinese pony up for this thing?". Nope.

Give the first film 'some' credit. They at least acknowledged that missiles weren't causing enough damage to affect the destroyer.

They should have known from the outset that the missiles weren't going to do squat, any one of their generals (esp. the ones from the AF, Marines, & Navy) would have known that air to air missiles have puny warheads and wouldn't do squat to the ship, shields or no shields. Shooting at thing with Sidewinders and AMRAAMs would be like shooting at a tank with a regular service rifle. Sure, you'd scratch the paint and maybe damage a few minor parts but you're never going to destroy or even disable it with your gun because the projectile is just too small and doesn't have enough power.

Pretty big let down. Didnt' have half the heart of the first. The whole film felt like it was missing a middle. Not once was there a "Oh crap a billion people just died, we need to acknowledge this" moment. It was just a bunch of stuff happening without anyone reacting to it, felt very weird.

Loved the queen though.

that's a PERFECT way to describe it.

for me, there just wasn't enough NEW. it copied it beat for beat. there also wasn't enough nostalgia and throw back. the old characters hardly interacted with each other. it was all to setup these boring and bland new characters and i didn't care if any of them lived or died.

well, i hope they fix things with part three. part two seemed like a footnote to setup part three.

oh, and on top of that giant monolith with all the names on it, they should have had a GIANT Russel Case statue with inscription 'paybacks a bitch'.
how BIG a laugh would that have gotten? felt like a lot of missed opportunities.

Minus the obvious faults all prior mentioned, the generic green screen cinematography and lack of depth in many, many scenes reeked of a made for tv movie of the week. Nothing at all stood out, the whole mess just blended together to the point it became a table read. If there is a sequel it likely wouldnt have the budget of this one. But, basing it in space would cut the budget down considerably with bottle sets and mass CGI. I wasnt expecting to be wowed with this one but I also easnt expecting to be fighting the snooze button either.

Wow. This movie fizzed here but made a boatload overseas. I don't know what the threshold is of course for it being a financials success. Perhaps these days it has to be a half billion on big budget movies. I am fascinated by this lately, that a film can do well or poorly domestic and the opposite foreign. Waterworld for instance pulled a profit and most people think it bombed.

Just watched it the other night. I fell asleep about 2/3s in and had to finish it a day later. I fast-forward-watched the rest.

I tried to watch the original with my son and fell asleep... more to put myself out of my own misery because it was so awful.
This is a perfect case of studio's thinking bigger = better. Bigger ship. Bigger guns. Bigger alien [queen]. None of which worked.

The acting was just as bad in this one as the original... maybe worse.
Bill Pullman is an awful actor and hasn't improved with age like wine or cheese.
Judd Hirsch... I was really hoping he was a goner. I can't stand him.
Brent Spiner... almost as irritating as Hirsch.
Thor's brother... meh.
Goldblum felt a little phoned in and forced.
I couldn't tell if Robert Loggia was actually CGI or real.

I did like when they crash inside the ship and the aliens are running around. That was probably the only cool thing.
The queen at the end was ridiculous and over the top.
The size of the mother ship was ridiculous.

So, yeah... this movie was everything I expected. It was just as ridiculous and stupid as Suicide Squad.

I saw somewhere online that the reason they might be making movies dumber/blander is because they translate better into foreign languages due to their more simple nature.

Maybe the more BO ground america looses, this is the current trend.

When the Secret Life of Pets seems like the most thought out intelligent blockbuster of the season nextto Finding Dory, you might have problems :)

this is a movie they could have totally redeemed! i think smith not being on board forced the story to change.. the doctor being asleep for 20 years.... yikes... no... he was just way too nutty in this movie, so nutty it was hard to take it seriously that he was the head of area 51... i was really let down by this whole thing

loved how the president was haunted mentally...
