Since the COVID-19 "safer at home" order began, I knew that I had to keep myself busy with various projects so that I didn't go stir crazy while confined to my own house for an extended period of time. While I occupied the first few weeks with completing some projects that had long been sitting in development, at about the 1 month mark, I decided it might be fun to use this extra time to work on something I always dreamed of, but never fully thought I'd be able to pull off, mostly due to time. Well, time is pretty much all I've got these days, so I decided to tackle a prop from one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite directors: Christopher Nolan's Inception.
The thing that finally made me take a leap was finding and purchasing the Zero Halliburton case from the movie since it is easily the hardest piece to procure and the most expensive part of the entire prop. Once I found the right one on eBay, the floodgates opened and I began to snag up every store-bought piece needed, and while I waited for those to arrive, I worked on the 3D models in Fusion 360. As of now, I've been working on this thing for about a month, and I finally feel ready to share a progress update with all of you given the fact that it's starting to come together and actually resembles the thing seen on screen (if you ask my wife, that's not very hard considering the fact that she described it as "just a case full of a jumbled mess" when I showed her the pictures of the screen used prop).
The final pieces I'm waiting on before beginning the final assembly of pieces is the metal base inserts for the top and bottom segments of the case. I'm looking into getting these professionally cut by a local metal-smithing shop, but may end up cutting them myself.
There are certainly more to come. Even though it feels like I'm getting close to the finish line, it could very well be a project that goes on many more weeks, and one that I'm sure I'll continue to improve little by little for years to come.
