Inception Movie Discussion

Okay, so who else is going to see this movie?! I am excited to be going tonight with StarTrekTOS(y)thumbsup From what I have read this movie looks to be a combination of the Matrix, Blade Runner, Dreamscape, and even the lesser known Japanese animated feature length film "Paprika" about a woman who enters people’s dreams using a contraption. The difference is the villains come out and alters the Earth, in an apocalyptic fashion. I am hoping that this movie does not dissapoint. I can't wait to see it, and post some info tonight:)

Reminded me of Dark City a little (another great movie). I'll be seeing it tomorrow afternoon. Looks cool!

Just got back from seeing it....WOW!!! A great, great film! If you enjoyed the first Matrix, liked Memento, and enjoy Twilight Zone type movies, you will love this film!

I'll post more details when I am a little more awake. One funny thing that happened during the previews prior to the movie. They were showing previews for a new horror movie with events taking place on an elevator, seemed somewhat interesting....then the title, then you see "By M. Nite Shymalan....and you here a collective "Awwwwwww" throughout the theater. Pretty funny stuff right there...lol!

I can't wait either - LOVE mind-benders & reality-twisters! Dark City and Memento are two of my favorite films... [drool smiley] :)

Well I woke up from a dream in which I was controlling my dreams and being chased, Pretty awesome. That movie was amazing and I can't wait to see it again. M. Nite Who LOL. Moocriket all three of the people in our vehicle were talking the entire way home about this. We said we felt bad you had no one to discuss it with on your way home. Thank Goodness for the RPF.

:lol:lol:lolI see you changed your signature^ based on what that dude said in the theater last night(y)lol

I thought it was great the way Nolan used actors from his batman films:)

I thought it was a decent flick... nothing too amazing though. I guess I was expecting a little bit more. I'll definitely see it again in theaters. I was a little let down. 3/4th of the trailer were all these mind blowing effects of the street turning upside down, etc and the movie itself (for me) didn't have enough of these effects. Like I said, I think I was just expecting more.

Nah, for me it was perfect. I love a film that makes you think, really think about what you are watching. Is it real, is he dreaming?...Is he in limbo? And the ending....perfect, as it leaves it open to debate, what you just saw, much like "The Usual Suspects"....which leaves you to wonder how much was real if any, and how much was simply fantasy:):thumbsup

I will absolutely see this one again, and I am sure I will enjoy it even more the second time.

I thought it was better than average, but nothing too extraordinary. It left far too many plot holes for me to really 'believe' in the movie, and the story's logistics were burgeoning at times.

Enjoyable to watch, as long as you don't really think about it.

It's a miraculous movie that really does put interpretive power in the audience's hands and DEMANDS them to think.

It's incredible that Nolan is able to do that through an immaculatley ballanced and succinct structure. The experience unfolds and doubles back on itself in an unbelievably satisfying manner, which is doubly awesome considering how (deservedly) provocative the ending is.

There's some serious thematic content being delt with in this movie. I can't wait to pick apart all the layers.

Lord, why do I always put myself on the wrong side of the fence like this :rolleyes

I guess what I disliked was the action side of things. The emotional exploration and manipulation was amazing, and the approach to grief and escapism was great. I also loved the world bending, and wish there was more scenes like the 'stair paradox' kill used in the second level dream.

But with the action, I felt the explanations for things was somewhat flimsy. Having the incredibly complex subconscious reject intruders with simple, throwaway baddies felt like a let down. I probably missed the explanation for this, but why couldn't Cobb & Co. create impossibly powerful weapons for protection?

I thought the ending was pretty cut-and-dried; that was Mal's totem; not his. Of course it wobbled. The whole thing was RISKY BUSINESS: just in his mind as he raked the leaves.

Also, Deckard is not a replicant. :angel

I prefer to believe that the totem fell, but then again I do like happy endings:)

Oh, I'm sure it fell, because the one time they showed him spinning it in the Limbo Level, it was still under Mal's control and could spin forever; it didn't wobble a bit, then. But it was her totem, not his. Nolan made a big point of other characters not even touching others' totems (I loved the RPF-specific point of Ellen Page lathing her own chess piece out of brass; that was great!) so that bit seems pertinent. When he spins it without Mal it's going to fall either in the dream or in reality.

But, I'm with you, I like happy endings too and I was really rooting for Cobb, so there's that. I'll have to see this a few more times before I really try to build a strong case either way, but after just the once this morning, I'd have to say he really did get to see his kids. Otherwise, the whole movie is a dream, and you end up in unsatisfied LOST finale territory and I can't have that happen to me twice in two months. :)

Well if it ended in a dream state it doesn't that does not necessarily mean the entire movie was a dream. He could still be in a limbo state when the plane lands and his limbo shows him waking up. But the way it ended it really could go either way. I believe he was awake at the very end of the movie.

The point is not whether the top falls, it's that we are not shown.

He can't know. WE can't know. The movie is about his journey as a tortured character, evolving to the point where he can WALK AWAY from the top.

As much as people will interpret one way or the other -- the top falling or not -- the movie does and will continue to support both. Neither is so important as the middle truth: his emotional reality.

Cobb transcends his existential doubt through reconciling his emotional reality.
